A friend has an Ipad 2 he wants to sell me. Its 32mb ATT 3g Will the assisted GPS work if I dont activate the ATT service? I googled it and the answers are all over the place.

I have the new ipad 4g. My GPS works fine with the New Garmin Map app, without activating the ATT wireless. I use my iphone 5 hotspot if I'm needing to connect to the internet.

Have used an ipad2 offshore with cellular off (battery drain) and gps worked fine with navionics app. This was on a sailboat between Caribbean and New England.

Good topic. We just bought the latest and greatest Ipad. I want to navigate using it so I downloaded Garmin bluechart program. I also have Active Captain that gives all marina info. However, I cant get the GPS to work. I know it will work with ph or internet signal. I jut cant seem to get it to turn on and follow my movements. On my Laptop, While testing the anchor alarm, I can walk down the dock and it will follow me as the anchor alarm goes off. I cant get the Ipad to do anything. I may need your help. Can you walk me through turning it on. Thanks.

It's not a Wi-Fi only unit, is it? If so, no GPS.

Its got an internal GPS. It can also use cell towers. I dont want a wireless plan or cell plan though . I already have a smart phone. I just want to use the GPS function on the I pad. I can see the screen on the bridge with the sun light, just like the 12" garmin chart plotters. Lots cheaper, and a touch screen too.

Send me a PM on friday and I'll give you a call tomorrow evening... if that works for you

PM sent. Thanks

ipads are great chart plotters with Navionics and work whether or not you're in cell range. You lose the ability to use the Bing sat photo overlay when you're out of coverage, but the chart plotting isn't affected.

My understanding is that the GPS is totally independent of the Cellular service, but I don't know anyone that bought a cell enabled ipad and didn't activate the thing.

Bad Elf GPS card (or something similar) is what you need to make any Ipad do precise GPS under any conditions. Been using the wi-fi only ipad for marine nav for two seasons now.

178.webpI........am a computer third grader! I bought an I-pad 3 32gig. installed I-navX 49.95 and bought a bad elf GPS.

The GPS is blue toothed to the I-pad with NO cell sevice of anykind. It works great!

I have run the IPad with Inav x for the last year with out cell service but it has the internal GPS and I have not had a problem at all. I have run from TX through Fl and the Bahamas. I used it also next to my bed as an anchor alarm.

I thought Garmins's Blue Chart program wall all I needed to install but I might need to install something else for it to work. I do not want cell or any other add ons to my monthly verison cell bill.

....in Settings on the IPAD go to the Privacy tab, and then Location Services..make sure those are on..and then make sure they are turned on for the specific app you are trying to use. That is where to verify GPS function for a specific App.

as an anchor alarm.. I use the Drag Queen app....that is just the best name ever...free from the active captain crowd.

Pate,

Enjoyed the chat!

Yeah Mike set me on the correct track. Turns out I bought the wrong Ipad (the one without the internal GPS). I was going to buy a cheap note book, then the guy at Best buy sold me the best Ipad they had (WRONG). Now I hope Best Buy will take it back and let me get the one with the internal GPS. I had a good time talking to Mike about other stuff too, like Flying airplanes and such. Turns out we have a lot in common. Man, this forum Rocks. Thanks Mike.

I was right seat shooting 2 ILS approaches today in a B58. Cool stuff and small world.

WHAT !!! Thats not right !! I'm jealous man.....

Pate,

My i-pad does not have internal GPS. Bad elf. separate unit about 100 bucks and has multiple uses.

I got my ILS in a BE-300 today. It's a good life:cool:

AGAIN....I'm Jealous. Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to try to exchange this Ipad, if they agree. If I cant exchange it, then I will certainly go with this product. Thanks.
