Okay, it's been dang near 24 hours since I started a thread, and I am suffering from massive thought back up! :p

This is sure to cause cases of starch to fly off the grocer's shelves, but how does one become a moderator on this forum? PLEASE understand I have no such desire to become one, and really do appreciate those who have undertaken this thankless job. I'm gonna talk to Doug about payin' you boys exactly what you're worth IMHO!

Now then, assuming this does not get zapped, I really would like to know how you guys came to be moderators. I know for a fact that none of you have ever met Doug, and only one of you has had as much as a telephone conversation with him.

How did you boys get those no paying jobs on here? "Sentient" minds want to know.

Now, would somebody also please tell me what sentient means? I asked Karl and he didn't answer, and I don't have a dictionairy here at home.

You read my mind but my question is what is a "Super Moderator"? I thought for sure on the Birdman could claim that label. :D

Alright, now you see what just happened? The guy who took my title for reaching senior status the quickest in site history just answered a question directed at the moderators of this site.

Good job Bill, I'm proud of you son! Whodda thunk you and Miguel could have ever changed my view on ambulance chasers and divorce makers!

I kinda figure ole' Jim's "super" is used in the same context as the old joke about the hooker who offered an older gentleman "soup-er sex" to which he replied I'll take the soup!

Hey Jim, no offense, but I'll take a good bowl of chicken noodle over a moderator any old day! :D

Birdman - If you were a moderator - who would moderate you?

Back in the early days, a long time ago (March '05). Doug asked for volunteers to moderate. Karl, Pascal & Dr. Jim offered the help. Now that the positions are full, you'll probably have to want until one of them dies (as in over their dead body :D ) before there will be another opening.

Hey Jim, I'm glad you cleared that up for me as I really did wonder how these boys got their jobs. No underlying motive or criticism mind you, I was just curious. BTW As to openings coming up only after these boys die, how old are those guys? Does anybody know their home addresses?

Now then, you mean these boys have only been on this forum for a little more than a year before me? Dang, now I really am confused!

Me, a moderator? Nah, moderbator or bartender maybe, but certainly not a moderator. Heck, I can't tell right from wrong, port from "starbored", east from west, genius from pest.... oops, now I forgot what I was talking about.

Damn ECT!

Fair is fair the way I see it. The "super moderator" from what I can see has 1528 posts and the Birdman has, at last count as of a few seconds ago, 1625 posts. Is the "super" title awarded to the member who has the most posts is there an element of subjectivity in awarding this title?

Was this post just submitted to get your credit score up to 55, or was this mine to up mine to 1626?

See, I coulda been a lawyer too! Then again I'd have to talk twice as much by saying half as much as anybody could understand without their own lawyer. :p

Keep replying and we'll both bravely go where no member has gone before. Ah yes, I can see it now, a big ole trophy with burning ears and bi-focals sitting atop a broken down Hatt model boat awarded to the first member with 1 million posts!

My question about the title "super moderator" was in fact very real. I am puzzled by the term and just assumed that the fellow that holds that unique title is sort of the "President" or Chairman of the Board (sort of). As to number of posts I have - I frankly couldn't care how many I have or don't have and think that the number of posts a member has should NOT be shown anywhere unless one logs in to a special box to find that out. It only serves to scare away many new people that might otherwise jump on to the many posts on this forum. :)

I agree with you on keeping up with numbers of posts made. Thread counts are only useful where bedsheets are concerned.

You're a new guy, but I remember Jim making a statement as to his title which he did not pick. Jim is a super guy and "somebody" recognized him as such and gave him the "supermoderator" title.

Sorry Jim, I just put words in your mouth, but I am sure you have more pressing issues in your real job that may keep you from ever seeing this thread. Dr. Jim's a proctologist in an ER you know!

Under "Edit Profile" in the user control panel moderators can set a custom user title. vBulletin's configuration permits the administrator (NOT moderators) to modify if and when people can set that status (e.g. some installations allow a custom user title when you reach 50 posts, some 500, some only for mods, some never, etc)

It means nothing, just as the "Senior Member" thing doesn't either.

Genesis:

Thanks for the clarification and explanation. My view as a newbie is that all of these titles, number of posts, etc should be abolished (or relegated to non-public viewing) so as to encourage a greater participation. When I log on to HOF I always see that there are roughly 35 to 45 people logged on but only 20 or so "members". The membership might increase if everyone was equal. Hierarchy is everywhere in the world and we don't need hierarchy in our HOF fun site - my view for what it's worth.

Bill

i dont pay much attention to these numbers and titles... i think the supermoderator tag shows up automatically... when i notived i had been tagged... i edited my profile to just moderator. it was a little silly looking... i think jim just didn't bother changing it or didnt' know he could.

I was on a forum where the new people were ranked with the title of " Fresh Meat" and it moved on from there. There were several steps to reach the "status" of senior member....namely 2000 posts/replies.

But people were proud of their numbers regardless of titles and wanted to keep them.

Starman:

Under those rules the Birdman would still be "fresh meat". Maybe you should post the name of that site so the Bird can grace that site with his wit and humour. :D

that will not work, I tried to get him to go to Passagemaker and Boat/US forums but "Fast Fred" was more than Randy could handle....... :o

Uh, does that mean you are agreeing with the previous statements that numbers of posts or desgnated titles mean nothing? ;)

Fast Fred, more than I could handle?

Take a look at the fact I made a post thanking ole' FF for his offer of assistance when I moved that 70 across the OWW.

Then look at the posts he made when I suggested, as on this site, interested members could do a meet and greet at the Miami Boat Show last month.

Do this and tell me that I, the beaked one, could not handle not so Fast Fred!

If you are so inclined, check it out at www.passagemaker.com As Byron pointed out, those guys make most of you look like rocket scientists who can tell you everything there is to know about rockets except how to have fun flying them! :D

Ryan wants to play now, so I hope you guys can get along without me for the next few hours!

FF vs the Birdman - now that would be something to watch! Long before I found the Hatt Forum I spent months just reading the many threads on Passagemaker and I think it is safe to say that FF is the King of Passagemaker as the Bird is to the HOF. There were not many postings that FF did not jump in to address and even RR would agree he doesn't miss the opportunity to spread his wisdom and sharp wit to those who post on HOF. I wonder how we get FF and the Bird to join the same forum.
