Mississippi has a submarine named after her. The USS Mississippi is in Pascagoula for her commissioning and I was fortunate enough to get a tour of the boat this afternoon.
She is a very impressive boat, everything is heavy duty and most of it stainless steel and laid out without an inch of space wasted. She is an attack sub clearly well suited for her mission.
However the good qualities of the boat were overshadowed by the men serving aboard her. In the course of our tour I had the opportunity to speak at length with one of her sonarmen, as well as a few of the other crew. The are First class, and dedicated to a very demanding and dangerous service. Saying, "Thank you for your service" seemed inadequate, but was the best I could think of.
Not all of our hero's are addressed by Memorial Day.
