Miami Show Recap

Yes.... but I always cringe at a clear finish wood transom.... all that upkeep just for a woodgrain butt... just seems unnecessary since the boat looks so nice anyway.
For most wood boat enthusiast, a painted transom is a no go. Usually an indication of significant rot or a bad match from a repair. I personally love the look of a wood transom, even on a modern glass boat.

As an ex professional woodworker I certainly appreciate beautiful wood grain, but by the "not hiding repairs" logic the entire boat should be clear finish (and a few are...super nightmare !)

Re clear finish wood transom addition to an FRP boat, that seems sillier still. But if one has the $$ to pay others to keep it in top shape, why not, I guess. Does your boat have a clear finish wood transom ? If you love the look.. why not ?

My old pacemaker had a wood transom with more repairs than original wood.Eventually it was either replank the transom or paint it. Varnish did not win.

I did take a piece of mahogany and laminate it on the old countertop and epoxy it in so I had my woodgrain fix. It was gorgeous book matched with a flame pattern. I wish I still had that piece of veneer. It was probably worth more than the rest of the boat.

Just keep in mind that the 70 MY on display is hull #1 and was built by the current owner who specified wood and color selections etc to their specific tastes. They allowed Hatteras to display it at the show since the factory boat wasn't quite ready.

There will be a fresh out of the factory 70 MY at the Palm Beach Show that has different wood and color combinations. That boat will be their display/demo boat.

The new 90 MY is in production and should be ready for next year's Miami Show. That will be an impressive model also.

I never did get to the Virginia Key Site. I did think the "in water" location was superior to the Convention Center. Miami has many political challenges to get it running correctly. This was the first year for the Miami Marine Stadium site. I hope the Super Yacht show gave them an indication on how underutilized the Miami waterfront has become to the yachting community.

Here's another picture of the Trumpy/Mathis. She's beautiful.

And yes, one of the photos on top is the new Hatteras 70. The more time I spent around it, the more I appreciated it. I thought the design was sensible compared to others. However, I thought the interior was "cold" and "cheezy" feeling. Hatteras' interior designer needs to be lost at sea!

Are you sure ? I ask as I was just talking with the parts gal at Hatteras a few days ago and she said they would be at Miami but not display at Palm Beach. Then again, she was just the parts gal and probably thinking more in terms of them "not usually" displaying at Palm Beach. Quite the "old timer" though...been working for them 39 years !

Have you seen the Faux transoms and toe rails. Amazing that you can not tell the difference.
Hats off to the artists that are doing this craft of painting transoms to look like the real deal.

I love the way this looks.

American Custom Yachts 90. Lotta varnish to keep up, but looks dandy.

I love the way this looks.
Hmmm....well, it is beautiful...but just seems so impractical... would certainly help to be in a covered slip at least. I think I'd prefer to get my "beautiful wood grain" fix on interior furnishings, not exterior.

A writer at Yachting magazine wrote a funny piece years ago where he pointed out so many of us are basically attempting to have floating grand pianos, in the worst possible environment to have such. He (tongue in cheek) recommended we go with military camo finishes even on mega yachts :)

I looked up SILVER FAST. The Queen of this year's Miami Boat Show was built of Aluminum last year in Australia. 253ft. 33ft beam. She's billed as the fastest motor yacht of her kind using conventional diesel power in the world. 27 Knots top speed. She'll cruise 6000 miles at 20 Knots before needing another 112,000 Liter fill-up! I wonder if that includes cleaning the windshield or a free set of dishes?

Even if you hit Powerball you couldn't do it. The price tag is $90 Million! Isn't that like $5 Million a year just for insurance? $30,000 a month just for dockage? Not to mention paying a full time crew of 15? I can't even imagine that much!

For those who missed seeing her, SILVER FAST will also be on display at the Palm Beach Boat Show March 17-20.

Rich or poor, it's nice to have money. All that exterior wood looks fantastic but the cost of maintenance must be a killer. I agree with Millacron and will limit my wood ogling to the interiors....on my boat that is. I love the look of exterior wood as long as someone else is paying for the maintenance.

The plan is for the factory 70MY to be at Palm Beach along with 70GT and 45EX. Not sure if 60MY will be there or not as it sold at the Miami Show. Hatteras had factory display there last year as well.

If you can afford that boat you can afford the maintenance. It's probably an 8 figure price to begin with.
