Miami Beach anchorages

I tried to make reservations at Miami Beach Marina for New Year's but they're booked plus 5 day minimum. Now looking for convenient anchorages to Miami Beach & dinghy docks to get ashore. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Girls want to do shopping, guys want to do LOOKING

I am at Miami Beach Marina right now. Great location, $.25 shuttle buses to shopping. Power and water are good. However, a bit rolly from the wakes, and $4.00 per foot per day. (!) At this price I am used to room service and clean sheets from the maid every day. I understand this place pretty well fills up for the winter.

I got a tip from someone last week to go on the south side of Fisher's Island, which is the south side of Government Cut at Miami. I eyeballed it on our way up here and it looks fine. It too may be rolly, depending on winds. Great place to view sunsets, and supposed to be quiet. There appears to be room to anchor in about three places to get some shelter. No idea how crowded it may get on holidays.

Plenty of places for anchoring farther down south of here, but then you can't shop easily. (This is the best way to save $$$.)

Hi Tom,

South Fisher Island is ok but a little far from the action. Anywhere west of monument Island, around or in between the houses. The main anchorage by the Miami outboard club is ok. That would be great to watch the fireworks from. Pascal always anchors out there. Some anchor by the boat launch / marine patrol headquarters about 17th street. That will put you in walking distance to Lincoln road and a publix. You can dingy up a small canel around there and get all the way to a publix. They enacted a three day rule for anchoring around here, but I don't think it is enforced. I'm at the Miami Beach Marina full time. PM me if you would like more info.

problem around MB is to find a place to land with a dinghy...

irt gets shallow quickly south of Fisher island, and probalby too exposed too, t's really a shallow pass to the ocean. A little further south West, just north of MArine Stadium or Marine Stadium itself is a much better place. We often anchor around there for the night, the view is terrific. Again, dinghy landing is an issue there too although you can probably dinghy over to Miami Beach...

they've just rebuilt the dinghy dock on the south side of Dinner Key, which is not South BEach but has plenty of things to do. Coconut Grove is like a small less flashy South Beach, within walking distance. you can anchor outside the spoil islands if the winds are calm or inside, near monty's marina, there is room there.

I just looked at Google Earth and it appears that there are a lot of boats anchored southeast and northeast of Belle Island. There is a public park north of Dade Blvd on Miami Beach. North of that, it looks like there is a boat ramp. I don't know first hand, but with that many boats anchored, there has got to be a way to get ashore with a dinghy.

Do any locals in Miami know if this is a boat ramp or if there is a place to tie a dinghy there?

I anchored at the 17th street location near the police headquarters last summer.

Great hold, lots of protection, fun dinghy ride up the Collins canal to South Beach.

The police visited within about an hour. They were extremely nice and told us we could stay a week and longer if we had weather or mechanical issues. He gave us a map of the area and told us the safest places to tie up our dinghy on the Collins Ave. canal.

The civil libertarian in me did not like the ordinance or the police visit. But before the ordinance that anchorage was really a vagrant suburb and now it can be used by cruisers passing through. So, out of self interest, I think this type of ordinance is a good thing for the cruising community.

I think this is case of jurisdiction, and the state has jurisdiction over navigable waters and has not conceded this to the local municipalities yet. Lord help us if they do. I would personally challenge stupidity when confronted by it. I am boning up on maritime law and documented vessels, since so many different agencies now think they have jurisdiction on the water. I intend to know what the law says and will challenge the idiots at every opportunity. I am also looking for an agressive law firm. The next poor bastard that wants to harrass me on the water better have his act together, because I will be ready. I will also be prepared to repel pirates and protect my vessel and crew. Nothing like video cameras to document an illegal stop and boarding. You may get to see it on the news, film at 11.

the SSCA doc i mentioned is worth keeping on board in case your anchoring rights are challenged anywhere in florida. it also includes contact info to report abuses...

With Google Earth you can see some dinghies tied up in the canal. Looks like this would be a good place to anchor for South Beach.
