Our friend and fellow HOF member BigBill was passing through Orange Beach on his way to Destin for the weekend and stayed a few slips down from us. WHAT A FUN GUY!!! He also has a 1972 58YF and we has so much fun climbing all over each other's boats and asking each other questions.
He has a big-time stereo system with 1,000 watts (mine has only 675!) and...get this...a DAQUIRI machine on his aft deck! We sipped Pina Colada's and chatted Hatt's. He has done some amazing work on his boat and I only wish he took pictues like YachtsmanBill because we could all learn much from his projects. He is refinishing all of the wood interior and it is really looking good. He even converted his twins to a queen in the master!
The most fun for me was looking at his engines. His boat was owned by the Government and they used it for research. They repowered her with new John Deere 12.5 liter six cyliner turbodiesels rated at 450hp and put a new 17kw Onan in the cockpit. Those engines are serious! It freed up at least a foot of space on each side of the engine compared to my 8V71Ti's. You should see the motor mounts that he government welded up. BEEFY! The sound was incredible too like two big tractors!
He scooted out too early for us to get a photo op, but hopefully we will meet again soon. He's actually spending the night here tomorrow night on his way back to Mississippi but we are flying to the Bahamas tomorrow for a week to cruise the Exuma's and won't be here to see him.
Once again this forum has helped bring fellow Hatt enthusiasts together for the love and continuation of our passion for Classic Hatteras Yachts.
