"I would rather discover that I am an idiot than have a broken boat. So I got my wish again."

I get this wish answered quite regularly.

Whenever you have people working on the boat, checking everything afterward is a must. It a a lesson I be heard the hard way over the years and which I still fail once in a while…fuel valves being moved, breakers being turned off, seacock left closed or mechanic on board for sea trial after maintenance not checking raw water pumps had re primed.

Full check is a must.

This.^^^^^^

As much as you would like to just write a check and go knowing everything is right is not going to work. Especially in today’s world. Not only do I end up checking everything I’m the final clean up guy. That is if I want it as clean as it was. Last little go around I had rust spots all over the cockpit deck. Mechanics guys with cut something up there or crap blew out of something as they were exiting. Little On/Off and good to go.

Glad it worked out. And now you know more about your boat. The hard way, just like everyone else.

my wish hasn't been granted very often. Former mechanics "crew" had injectors and valves set ALL OVER THE PLACE. Final result

Same exact thing happened to me with this “specialist” mechanic I stupidly hired off the Detroit diesel Facebook forum without checking up on him like I should have. Ended up rebuilding both engines. Timing was way, way, off.

This is exactly the reason I brought up the topic of liner size in a previous post a while back. If one has a shady mechanic hone your block for #4 liners when its not necessary and it all goes south, you can't rebuild again because your maxed on liner size. Rsmith did accurately comment that a rebuild will last in his case 20,000 hours, but if the rebuild fails where are you? you're shopping for a new block. Outside possibility yes, but attention to details is what prevents problems.
