Hatteras Model
40' DOUBLE CABIN-Series I (1986 - 1989)
(I started to combine this Thread with a previous one but I wanted this particular one to stand so as to get as much feed back as possible)

Just this morning I spoke with a Freightliner Service Manager about what he recommends for engine coolant flush. For 27 years he has been using....(sit down)...........

....................(you ready?)......................

.......................................

.....................................CASCADE!!!

Yea thats right, the dish washing detergent! Prefers the liquid form too (I didn't have the gonnads to ask him what his wife cleans the dishes with).

Has anybody heard of doing this - besides me???

This is a reputable truck dealer FCOL.

(Think maybe he uses pledge to wax tractors??) - (I can't get off this...).

(KY?...wonder....no I ain't going there!).

Yep.

It doesn't foam, its fairly aggressive, its designed for pressurized application (think guys) and yet its also pretty mild on things like plastics, metals and of course glass.

Just make sure you get it ALL out of the system when you're done. If you don't it will eventually eat your water pump seals.

Why are you afraid of going to Kentucky?

I owned a Freightliner myself, but I've never had anyone suggest using Cascade to flush a cooling system. I don't see why it wouldn't work though, I just won't buy the Cascade from a Freightliner dealership who will be selling it for $49.99 as Freightliner radiator flushout solution!

I wonder if this will earn the Martha Stewart Closed Cooling Seal of Approval? :D

It also works great for cleaning house windows if you put some Cascade in one of those garden fertilizer attachments and hose down the windows then rinse.

FYI Caterpiller recommends flushing with a sodium bisulphate based cleaner, then a follow-up flush with a sodium carbonate based neutralizer.

Cascade contains the later plus 5.3% phosphorus, sodium silicates and enzymes.

My CC system will be lemon fresh! :p

But no wonder our dishes are really clean, I've been washing them with RADIATOR FLUSH!!!

Why do you think it would mess up the seal there is a seal in a dishwasher that seems to last for many years??

I'm not a smart ma-an, but I know what soap is.

Good question Lt Dan. How can this stuff hurt seals when it is in fact used in a dishwasher under tremendous pressure and heat?

Bill, fresh as a summer's eve? What kind of applicator do you use to put this stuff into your CC system?

FREEGUMP,

the dishwasher does a good job of draining and rinsing with fresh water.

(Hope you are satisfied now that the whole Forum knows who wears the pants afound Capt'n Bill's house) :D

While I'm hoping another "Tech" thread will bail me out of having to flush CC systems for another year ("extended life" coolant) WM offers a 12V pump with reversable switch which I'm sure I will be able to mix in a 5 gal. bucket or can. When I had all hoses replaced the mechanic also installed a hose with cap on lowest coolant drain port for ease of drain/flush. Hence the necessity of 12V pump. But filling would be into HE cap, again pumping out of bucket.

Sure as hell hope that this can be accomplished without much spilage.

Should I add sparkle sanitizer?

Gratias Senior Mike.

I guess now that everybody knows who does the dishes in my house (but I got one gooood cook) they might as well find out that I do windows too.

I'll take any short cut I can get. My boat "To-Do" list is long and getting longer!

Wonder if I can convince the Admiral to do the cooling systems?....Naw.

Did George stop in and visit you this week?

I sure do hope I don't let you do-own. ;)

It also will remove paint in strong concentrates. Been there done that. I can add that to my Oh Sh-- list. I used it in My bilge.

BILL

LOL at Trojan Bill, yet another use for Cascade, paint remover! Flushing your CC system and prepping for new paint all in one application! :D

Sounds more versatile than WD-40 which does all kinds of things it wasn't meant to do either. Kinda like K-Y!

Damn sounds like it would make work for me. having to pump the soapy water out of the bilge. In Floriduhh we just drain the distilled water out and flush with clean water if there is no build up. I hope the environmental guys dont take issue of the distilled water being dumped overboard though.

FYI I did check with them about the additives and they were ok with it going out the bilge pumps.

Well I figured everyone would at least rinse it some what! After all it would be hard to get the antifreeze and water into a system still filled with Soap.
I was Implying let say there was 1 gallon left behind, would and could it do damage I find it hard to Imagine. But you should flush it as always but it should be less damage then most cleaners for water systems!!!

LOL at Lt Dan! That's all I have to say about that! :D

Yo Bird I doubt you can get them 12v71's in the regular dishasher. Might need to get you one of them large industrial size ones.

Someone on a thread about a year ago suggested using Cascade in a woman's nylon, tied up in the forward bilge, and hanging in the water. This was said to eliminate bilge odors. We have been using it ever since and we have no bilge odors. I do notice the paint in that forward bilge is peeling off but i don't know if it is caused by the cascade.

Yep. It works great as a bilge odor eliminator.

It DOES eat cheap paint. Oh well. I'd rather have a clean and NOT stinky bilge. I used it regularly on Gigabite.

Is there anything to be concerned about over not having the bilge surfaces painted? I've got some places where it's peeling off, and then the entire area under the master berth, including shower sump, isn't painted at all, and appears to have never been painted.
