  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
31' CRUISER (1967 - 1971)
Has anyone ever tried birch ply and then stain it mahogany?
Does anyone have a couple of extra sheets they didn't use?
Is Sams the best source?

I would rather use LUAN underlayment--its mahogany and about $7 a sheet at homo depot. ws

Luan is Phillipino for s__t!!

It doesn't belong on the planet, much less a boat. The glue is flour and water!!

Happy Holidays all.

On the Chris I wanted Phillipine marine plywood. I never could find marine, plento of cabinet grade though. Okoume is very nice but everyone wanted to ship 20 sheets. Paperback veneers are easy to get, so got some marine ply and vacuum bagged it using epoxy. Looks like origanal and will take some water.

It never dawned on me that those toy 43s used 1/4 paneling for the bulkheads.
I use the stuff for for facing and CHEAP templates for windows and such, AND have a bunch thats 20 years old in the garage thats wetter than the boats and still fine. Must be a FIRE ISLAND homo depot thang. :D ws

I have used a ribbon grained sapelle in place of mahogany with good results. The problem is color. Sapelle is very red. If you want a brown tone-forget it.

Ya forget yer art class?? Red and green make brown. Those judges can really be a bunch of tuff cookies !! ws

I think I'll go with World Panel Products. It only 65 miles away

Birch on a boat , just as luan is a big NONO !

Neither have the type 1A glue needed for the marine enviroment.

3/4 Teak sells for about 130 a sheet, mahogany is less. All of these come in 1/4, 1/2 , and 3/4

I didn't find anything in that price range. Sam's is $153, and world Paneling is
$165, but it is much closer. If you know of another source, that would be helpful.
Thanks

Atlantic veneer in Beaufort nc 252-728-7620

It is about an hour from my place. I buy all my ply there because I can pick and chhose the grain scheme I want for diffrernt rooms. ( sequenced sheets )

Go to my web-site and look at the salon wood, it is all sequenced.

As far as Teak and Holly Ply goes, I have another source for that and can sell it fairly cheap.

I can get ply from another source, and have it drop shipped. Not sure if they are open next week. Many stores closed for the holidays.

You can get 6-8 sheets of ply delivered by truck for about the same price as 1 sheet. They take up the same amount of room on a pallet. Something to keep in mind when ordering.

Don't know where you are located, but in White Plains, NY Maurice Condon has been selling all sorts of wood since I was a kid.
Jamestown Distributors is another source I recall hearing.

Google or Yahoo "Marine Lumber" and you'll pick up other sources.

If you are doing an entire room, you can make it any combination of wood and stain that appeals to you. But if you want to integrate a new section with existing paneling, the choices immediately narrow.

And synthetics may also appeal especially in wet areas. "Formica" brand and others make a wide variety of laminates that can be glued over exisitng panels if thats an option for your project.

I stopped by World Panel on my way to Miami. Neat place. They use marine ply, and have their own press. I asked if they had afromosia, and they said no, so I asked how long it takes to get some, and the answer was "I can make some now if you want it".

Thanks guys for all the info. I'am in the hometown of Hatteras Yachts, and will
choose a supplier nearby. Many choices. Starman has a great site. Check it out.
