Bob, If you go with the Magnum, Hodgesmarine.com had the best price I found.

Just to close the loop on this thread, Inverter Service Center has the best price on a Magnum.

In my quest for information about the problem, I wrote to and had prompt responses from Victron in The Netherlands and then got put in contact with their US sales office. It turns out my unit was made in 2005, although I purchased it in October 2006. They were field repairable until some upgrades were made and the circuit boards went out of production.

They are offering me a new 3KW unit at a sizeable discount - one that cannot be ignored - so I'm replacing the old Victron with a brand new one. This will be very simple swap as all wiring is the same. And they threw in a new control panel! I'm a happy boater!

Now I need to get a safety cover to prevent bumping the on-off switch again and get it installed (too heavy for me to get into place).
