Today I had the pumpout boat come by and pump my holding tank. When he was finished he asked if I wanted lye to put in my tank. He said that DHEC was suggesting using lye to help dissolve solids and paper. I said thanks but no.

Has anyone ever heard of this? Would the lye be harmful to the fiberglass?

Uh..No.

It won't harm fiberglass and I've not heard of straight lye/caustic soda/sodium hydroxide being used as a preventative.

It might help break down "stuff" but if it's sludged up thick, it probably won't do much.
