  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
42' LRC - Mark II (1980 - 1985)
I dont have much experience with the LRC downwind/downsea in much above 5'. Anyone out there with lots of experience running downsea with a higher seastate?
Thanks

J

IDK about LRC but I wouldn’t trust the autopilot most don’t do well in following seas and if it let the boat get beam to it could broach.

Whole lot of wheel spinning based on anticipation on what the eyes see. You learn to anticipate and turn the wheel before the bow gets pushed around. Can keep it mostly straight but expect surprises and whipping the wheel way back the other way and then fast to anticipated position. I also ask the wife to stop commenting on ANYTHING under these conditions. Yeah, the dogs are scared. Want to see them really scared?

It's really just getting the feel for your boat at the speed you run and get used to it. But never get relaxed. I have been near broached in my 34. Treat it like electricity. Never lose respect.

Having never used them, I was just reading about drogues and sea anchors last night. And was considering the applications while running dangerous inlets or surprise squalls that cause hazardous sea states.

A drogue may be useful in your scenario or at least have one to readily deploy if taking it against the beam, in a quartering seas, or broach...

here are a couple of the articles I was reading.

I don't have much experience in my 58LRC in 5' downsea conditions either .... if faced with a potential broach situation my gut reaction would be to turn around into the sea if possible and make just enough headway to maintain steerage.... I do carry a 24' sea anchor on board as well ... here's what I have ...
