  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
So last year I sanded my rails, again as I didn't get enough coats of Awlgrip on. Again one rail not enough coats apparently as per pic below. Do I have any options to fix the white peeled areas or do I have to sand again?

They do not look to bad. I believe with a good sand, 220 grit and 3 coats of varnish you will be set. I do not believe that you have to go down to bare wood.

Second that ...

That looks like a win to me. Should be able to fix that.

Just finished sanding all rails down forward of the wing doors. On goes about 7 coats of Bristol this week. And hand rail covers are on the short list.

The covers are sounding like a good idea.

I'm assuming they are not available off the shelf and have to be custom made?

Thanks all for the insight. I will give it a light sand and try to add some coats.

If you do go with the covers, make sure that you take them off while you’re underway. The wind buffets against them and will scratch the varnish off. Ask me how I know.

Wind? From moving at 8 kts? The wind at the slip is probably causing the chafe.

I have covers and they've saved my rails since I've moved to SW FLA.

I learned how to sew when I was a kid on my mom's
Singer. Found a lead to rent a sailor's Sailrite sewing machine. Need to do a bunch of canvas projects. Hand rail covers will be near the top of the list. I will report back on my various canvas projects.

The ironic part about the rail covers, is that after 7 hands of varnish is like the Afghan lady that gets a boob job only to cover them with ane new gurka robe.

So true! LOL... and I'm up to about 13 coats now....
