Looking to purchase a 65 Convertible...Series I or II?

Are these engines really rated at 710hp? Tell me that can't be true.

Is that photo of the helm area the bridge deck? Wow. When they say "enclosed", they are not fooling around, are they.

No, it's a misprint. I would say 1350 min. but more like 1400HP

As for stabilizers, the new gyro stabilizers are the way to go but the cost can be huge. I think you need two of the smaller ones for the 65C but you might get away with one. Florida Bow Thruster recently did a 65EB so they could give you some insight on cost and other options.

If you get serious about the CA boat, start a thread here inquiring about West Coats facilities. There are a few guys here that are on the west coast and have used yards in Ensenada.

I checked with Florida Bow Thrusters. They don't claim to have done a 65C and gave a rough estimate, subject to seeing the boat, of between $150,000 and $190,000. Do you have the Naiad's or Gyro-Gale in yours?

Sorry for the mix up, the 65 they did was a bow thruster install. I have Naiads in mine. The Seakeeper is a neat unit but pricey. Was that quote for one unit or two? I thought they ran about 75-80K for a typical installation.

"We have not done an install in this model Hatteras and I did speak to Sea Keeper and they do not have a gyro in this model boat yet. A rough estimate for something like this would in the $150,000.00 to $190,000.00 range depending on what would need to be done to get the Gyros installed. If the boat is in the Florida area and this does seam like something you would like to pursue let me know and we will take a look."

So based on the reply it's hard to tell if one or two units. I'm not familiar with the new system but at that cost I think I would prefer to look at a set of traditional stabilizers. I guess there no such thing as installing anything but factory new ones (?). Will deal with it when and if the time comes.

Having said the above comments; I looked at the SeaKeeper website and that technology looks amazing - just wish it wasn't so expensive. Read some of their info and still don't quite grasp how that system dampens the roll. Will be interesting to look into it further when I get a chance.

Thanks

I also have considered moving up to a 65C series ll with the Cat 3412's. My main concern is draft, advertised drafts are from 5'2" to 6'. The 6' draft would limit my intended use too much. Does anyone know the actual draft of the enclosed vs open bridge.

I was on the sea trial of a 55 Hatteras convertible that was fitted with the Seakeeper gyro. I thought it was pretty impressive, but the sea state we were in really didn't give it a chance to show what it could do. It's pretty trick technology, though, if something so small can stabilize something so big. And of course it works whether the boat is running or not.

Most are 5'4". If they have a lot of additional gear they'll draw a bit more but not too much. I think the 16V2000 boats sit a bit deeper due to the added weight of the engines and larger running gear.

About the same as the 60C and my 50C. That would be max for me.
Thanks

Most 65's have a 5'4" Draft, BUT some of the late model boats I think 2001 to 2004 with MTU/DD 2000 Series 1800HP do have 6'0" draft from what I remember. This was due to some being spec. with deeper gears and bigger wheels so if thats an issue which it would be for me, you'll have to look at each booat individually. 1987 to 1994 65's had a 5'4" draft with a deep protective Keel that was right at the bottom of the wheels and afforded some protection. But in 1994 while still maintaining the 5'4" draft Max at the wheels the keel was cut a little for a bit more speed by having less wetted surface, but the wheels are more exposed. I do believe a slight prop pocket was added about that time as well. Now for the 60C 1997 to 2003 had a 5'4" draft until 2003 when they added pockets/tunnels and reduced the draft to 4'11" on open bridge and 5'1" on enclosed bridge. The 50 was the same as the 60 I believe.

I think you're right on with that draft. About a foot more than I'm used too so if I do purchase and ever do bring it to Georgian Bay; I'll have to be very careful. Seems that with that draft and the minimum bridge clearance - it will be something to get used to and maybe ship with Sevenstar; I'm told they are offering a new service into the Great Lakes from either Palm Beach or Freeport.

I'm going to have to look into the Seakeeper system - seems awesome. I don't know where it would fit though. Is there much room under the cockpit sole for one of those gyros? On the few that I've been on there did not seem to be much depth/room underneath with all the rudder gear, stringers and supports back there.

This is a great forum and I look forward to becoming a Hatteras owner soon. Thanks for all the great input and insight. I look forward to contributing when I can as I'm one of those hands on boaters that has done everything from a cockpit addition/extension on a motor yacht, osmosis repair, Imron painting & refinishing to all the regular maintenance stuff. Of course I use the marina services when I can't do it myself or don't care to.

With the 65C I'm really not looking to do much other than enjoy and maybe update a few electronics.
