  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1978 - 1983)
I currently own and enjoy a 1979 43C. I am looking to move up to a larger convertible that has at least 2 full heads/showers, and a washer/dryer. I looked at a 1979 55c today and was disappointed with the small salon due to the galley up-dinette configuration. I am looking for suggestions as to which models have the largest salon areas, with galley down and a good sized queen master stateroom. My budget is keeping me in the late 70's early 80's vintage, and under 60 feet. Any suggestions would be appreciated, it will save me some leg work looking at lots of boats. Thanks.

You might look at a 58YF. Basically a 58MY with a cockpit

A 58 YF is nice but not a convertible. Its really going to depend on what you want and are willing to spend. There are a bunch of us on the site that are brokers. Get hooked up with one of us and find your dream boat.

My brother is a broker, I was just hoping to save him and myself a little time by narrowing the search. I have considered the 58 YF, but I am partial to convertibles. I was hoping there is a 50-55 convertible with the amenities I am looking for. Does anyone know if the 55c was ever made in a galley down version?

The 55 convertible was also available in a galley down configuration. Check the brochures library.

It sounds to me that that would be your perfect boat. There are a couple galley down 55s on yacht world also.

Or, move to the 58 or 60 open/enclosed bridge convertibles. Lots to choose from.

Good luck!

There is a nice looking 55 galley down in max. Jack might chime in with some info on her.

There is a nice looking 55C, galley down, two stateroom in the Panama city area, called Jackl I believe. Been for sale for quite some time, seems to have been set up for cruising, no outriggers, no tower, minimal electronics, but its clear with a large salon.

This one is in great shape and would have been a nice choice if it fit your budget, Not sure what she's under contract for but I know they were willing to take a bit less than the ask almost a year ago.

Here's another but I don't know anything about her other than she has been for sale for a while.

There are a few 2 stateroom 55's out there but they're pretty rare. The 52C, 50C and 53C all came in 2 stateroom galley down models. Much less desirable so you should be able to get a better deal on one. A 2 stateroom 50C is a very hard boat to sell so if you find a clean one you might be able to get what you want for a relatively low price.

This 52C seems to have everything I am looking for. Anyone here familiar with this boat?

My general outlook on the 52C
I have few complaints:
The master stateroom is a little tight and the closet floor space is inadequate.
There is no room for a descent size garbage can in the galley.
There is more freeboard in the stern than I would like.
The tuna door would be better to port another 8" to 12".
Engine room is a little tight but it is workable.

The visibility from the helm is great and it is reasonably dry. There is a ton of storage up there. The gunwales are fairly wide making a comfortable walk to the bow. The cockpit is well laid out with plenty of room. The salon is nice sized but layout can be improved thanks to modern technology. We are ditching the wetbar/counter and installing a motorized tv in the center 2 cabinets. We decided to go with 2 swivel barrel chairs and a highlow to double as a dinette. The coffee table takes up a lot of room and did not seem to work for us. The galley is reasonable for 1 person to operate comfortably in. Counter space is at a premium. The guest head is adequate but the shower could be a little small for bigger folk. The guest bunks are comfortable and the way they worked the door, there is enough overall room not to feel cramped. The one you are looking at does not seem to have the closet on the starboard side just before the guest bunks. I thought that is where they would have put the washer/dryer.

IMO, the boat is great for weekends or extended vacations but would be to tight for a couple as a live-aboard.

Those 52C engine rooms are cramped for being Hatteras engine rooms.

I have always said, the 55C feels like a "big 55" while the 52C feels like a "small 52".
