I remember several years ago a private boat rolling over on the East River in Manhattan during a similar not-for-hire dinner or wedding party situation.

I seem to recall that the boat may have been a Hatt MY in the 50 (+/-) foot range

The boat rolled over somewhere north of the Water Club and was towed to Randals Island.

My recollection is 30 + people in the water and no deaths.

Im going to dig to see if i can find any reports....

I found this....

as per NY Daily News dated 07/15/1995

The boat rolled over in calm water possibly from a "swell" encountered during a turn...

46 1/2 foot boat
38 people

Beyond the weight issues, keeping track of all those folks (for whom you'd be responsible as captain) would be a headache, I'd think. Are you sure you want to do this?

I think the Coast Guard theoretical weight for passengers was revised upwards after that disaster in upstate NY when an inspected vessel capsized and several people died. The weight allowance for passengers was not realistic- as a country we've gotten heavier and it needed to be increased considerably. I had the impression it went from 150lbs to 180 lbs for adults. Which still isn't enough.

I have tried a few people at Hatteras but none were willing to give me any original structural plans. If anyone has better luck please let me know

On our 58 ft YF (1972 vintage) we have had 75 aboard in the slip. I would not dream of getting underway with that many. Even with them spread out evenly, the water level in the heads increased to several inches deeper than normal when the boat draft increased.

This is from Sector Jacksonville.

I would assume similar procedures apply elsewhere.
Check the "Stability" links about halfway down the page.
