  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
61' MOTOR YACHT (1980 - 1985)
I am in the process of buying a 1985 61' MY to be based in the
South Tampa area as a live aboard. Any suggestions for best bets for insurance for this situation and area would be much appreciated.

I have had our Hat insurance with Willis of Florida, Inc (6200 West Courtney Campbell Causeway, Tampa, FL 33607, (813) 281-2095) for many years. The coverage is currently with Travelers and has been for several years.
I have had no problems with the agent or the coverage. They have only required a survey about every 7 to 10 years. Of course, now that I have said that they will want a survey every year from now on.

Good luck.

Angela is the forum's expert on boat insurance !!! You can also use the "seach" and pull up her past posts on the subject.............

You might want to be know as a full time cruiser than a liveaboard when you talk to an agent. And let us know how you make out with Travelers. I was told by an agent up north that they no longer write policies in Florida. I got them for my boat via MTOA, but have to be north of Cape Hatteras for the storm season.

Travelers will require you to be north of cape hatteras June 1st through Nov. 15th (which is the hurricane season) on any new policy issued unless your value is over 2 million then they just charge you an arm, leg and first born for it.

Look into Seaworthy Insurance Company, Lloyds, Great Lakes, they are all A+ rated Lloyds and Great Lakes are non admitted however but are 2 of the best non admitted carriers out there.

Boat US gave me a quote over the internet....no live person with no questions regarding live aboard. $7600.00 which I guess is cheaper than rates were running a few years ago. The current owner is paying $6500 with the same company.
Considering liabilty only if anyone will write such a policy. It doesn't take long to build your own self insurance fund with rates in that neighborhood. Everyone tells me I should be happy someone is willing to quote on such an old girl.
Is this what I should expect to pay for Florida waters?
My hat off to Brian of Lady Z! The surveyor could only find six mandatory items after a full day and most delt with safety issues. I consider myself very lucky to be starting with such a solid platform of maintenance with his 61. Here's hoping I can keep it that way!

Contact Atlass Insurance, in Merritt Island, FL, speak to Hortensia. I have a liability only policy through them, and have been quite satisfied with them.

Old GIRL ????????

Around here 1985 isn't very old :)

Good Luck with Her!

The Atlass tip was a sucess. Full insurance on about $300,000 for $4300 with navigation limits of both Florida coast, Bahamas, and Turks and Caicos.
5% deductible unless it is a named storm and then it goes to 10%.
Under written by Lloyd's. Their at 941-525-0582 and the contact is Cynthia Stiles.
Thanks for the suggestions!

Lloyds is a good company. If you guys ever have any questions and want some no strings attached answers I specialize in boat/yacht insurance we have 2 offices in NY and an office in N Palm Beach FL and write insurance everywhere. I will help answer any questions for you HOF'ers even if I dont write your insurance. Atlass is a good brokerage youll be happy with the service you receive.
