I'm surprised to hear Bertram is done, the last few months they have been seriously revamping and getting ready for the shows.

Bertram and Hatteras are solely responsible for letting Viking get as good as they have. If they would have innovated faster and kept service top notch they would have not allowed this monster known as Viking take over the battle wagon market!

I'm surprised as well, I actually received an email from them not long ago with the specs and drawings on their New 60C. It will be a shame if they're really finished and not to return. Think about the run they had in the 80's, 90s and even early 2000's of world famous Hulls. They were ahead of their time in styling, built well, and great riding. Then came the Ferretti expierement. Thay became to round, stylish and European for the American Fish Boat Buyer. It is a sad day for the boating/fishing community if they really are Done.

China has targeted U.S. boat building as another industry to move to China, for a few years now. The recession put a brief hold on this.

It is national policy, and expect to see them do whatever it takes to wipe out U.S. manufacturing in the U.S. boat industry: free land in China, slave labor wage rates, etc. etc.

A few years ago I was surprised to find Chinese tariffs of about 85% (42% plus manipulated undervalued currency of about 40%) on any vessels sent to China, and of course, there are zero tariffs on any Chinese vessels sent here.

Be sure to thank your local bought off politician, the first chance you get.

U.SA. boat industry CEOs will make a ton more money doing this, for a few years, until the Chinese take over their plants. That is the brilliant model that has worked so well in wrecking the U.S. economy across the board.

Costs have gone up in Taiwan and in the past 5 to 10 years a number of builders that used to build in Taiwan have opened yards in communist China. The jury is still out on whether quality is up to par.

After 6+ years of running a taiwan build 70 footer, I can tell you Taiwan quality is pretty good, at least from the experienced yards, but their stainless steel isn't even close to US quality... I go thru a bottle of rust stain remover every couple of weeks! Fiberglass work is pretty good with decent gelcoat, no blisters or cracks.

That said, it now looks like some builders are coming back to the U.S... If I m not mistaken Gunboat (high end, large cats) has open a facility in either NC or SC and seem to be doing well. If rumors are true, Ocean Alexander is looking at the bertram plant...

As to bertram it is a shame but they ve been on life support for 20 years. They first shut down in the early 90s while Hatteras struggled thru the tough times and then managed to reopened on and off. But let's not forget their well publicized delamination problems... I think that was the final nail in the coffin.

Hatteras is coming back in a big way. They not only have sold orders for the new 45EX already but have made numerous upgrades to the 60MY, and have several new models coming out including the very impressive 70GT. The company is debt free, has just increased the size of its workforce to handle the increased activity and has revamped its dealer structure to provide better customer service. The new management is very attuned to the market and is committed to restoring Hatteras as a premier yacht builder of motor yachts, Sportfish and express models.

The resin infused hull contributes to the increased performance of the GT Series while retaining the superior Hatteras ride when the seas kick up. I have run the 63GT and the ride and performance is extremely impressive. I am glad to see Hatteras getting back to an aggressive position in product development and refinement.

They will have many of their models at the Lauderdale Show.

Besides the new GT70, 70MY, 45EX, and what I heard about a possible GT84, what other models do you think maybe coming out or designs released? Thanks.

With any luck, a small (45') convertible. I just hope.

I don't think any foreign industry in mainland China is safe from a government takeover. I think any move over there is quite short-sighted, frankly. And this doesn't even address the way they run the country and the way they treat their citizens. It's disgraceful.

There is a 52 Express on the drawing boards but going to be a while before that will be ready for production. There is prob going to be a 45EX with a Flybridge but an open bulkhead design. (At least at first). They plan to introduce 7 new models over the next 3 years, including the models we have already mentioned. Not sure exactly what other models are planned.

Although the 45EX is the Cabo 44 hull there have been many changes to make the model a Hatteras. It now has the resin infused hull like the other Hatteras models, the bridge deck and cabin is redesigned with upgraded materials. The windshield is quite amazing as it has no support pillisters so the view forward is completely unobstructed.

The Hatteras display at Lauderdale is going to be extremely nice and worth checking it out if you are going to the show.
