Never seem to remember this, but I think it is the large nut first and the second as a lock nut. Am I right (I've got a 50/50 shot at it)?

This is a highly debated topic, but my research suggested that the small nut goes on first. The large nut unloads the theads of the first nut and locks them in place.

Now that you mention it that does sound familiar. Never removed or replaced them myself, always had the yard do it.
