There is nothing better in this area than anchoring out behind Keewaydin Island. We take our dogs to shore there on a regular basis. Easy access, beautiful sunsets, always calm at the south end. I would post a photo if I knew how! Absolutely no comparison between this and going into Naples Bay. Good luck.

It's a public beach so your ok , but I don't think they have garbage cans but the stuff/poop is biodegradeable :D here's a picture of the guest spot I can offer guests that stop by Marco/ Isle of Capri by boat. If Naples spot falls thru..

Crossing Lake Okeechobee

This should make crossing lake O interesting ( 72 hour wind/wave prediction ). I called the lock operator today and he said that the rim route has 3 feet of water (I draugh 3.5 feet) and the route thru the lake has 6 feet. If the wind blows up a 3 foot chop, it is possible that 6 feet will not be enough depth. May have to delay a day.

Mark

Hummm... The link above is always 72 hours from the time that you view the link. The link won't make much sense after today!

I'm back home. The trip didn't go according to plan. On Day 1, I passed the wrong side of red marker #52 just before Port Mayaca lock. It was a boneheaded mistake. There was a lot going on on the bridge getting ready to enter Lake O. This was the first marker since St. Lucie Lock (approximately 20 miles). The marker is approximately 100 ft from the south short of the waterway and 250 ft from the north side. Just beyond the red marker is a set of dolphins on the north shore for commercial barges to tie-up. I went between the red marker and the dolphins and hit something hard (the lock operator at St. Lucie lock thinks that there is an old spillway wall in that area) . Did not have any water coming in but had a heck of a vibration. Limped back to American Custom Yachts in Stuart at 8 knots. They short hauled the boat and put my spare props on. The starboard prop is bent so bad that there are chunks missing. Starboard shaft was bent slightly as well as the strut. They put on my spares and had the boat back in the water in 45 minutes (for only $277 total)! I wanted to save my vacation and address the shaft and strut later. We spent our first night in Indiantown, anchored in the Okeechobee waterway.

Second day, we traveled 115 miles to Captiva Island, arriving 15 minutes after sunset. Shortly after tying to dock, the port engine stalled. Fuel gauge read 1/4 so I figured that it must have been a fuel filter. The next day I changed the primary (it was dirty!). The engine fired almost immediately (3208 cats) but it only ran a few minutes. After some trouble shooting, concluded that the port fuel tank was empty! Primed the fuel filters and idled over to the fuel dock for a sip (100 gal) of $3.36/gal fuel.

We figured that we had lost one day of our stay in Captiva and we worked with the dockmaster to get another night. Turns out that MarineMax had reserved a large block of space for an event and a lot of boats "had to leave" . But MarineMax had some no-shows so we got an extra night. South Seas Plantation Resort is gorgeous. There were manatee and dolphin in the marina all three days. We were a short walk to the beach. We had a great time.

We decided to not go to Everglade City (my navigation error took out that day) and decided not to travel south to Naples as it would require a 100 mile day to get to Clewiston (our last stop on the way home). We went to Ft. Meyers for fuel (300 gals @$2.45). Spent the night in Legacy Harbor Marina and spent the next morning at the Edison-Ford Winter Home Museum.

We left Ft. Meyers later than expected and got to Clewiston around 7:30 pm, New Year's eve. Ran the last hour or so by moonlight and radar.

Got home New Year's day ahead of the afternoon thunderstorms.

Next year, my daughter's school schedule is different. They will have 2 weeks off starting 12/23. Maybe we will make it to Naples, Everglade City and Key West next year.

Wow. Glad to hear I'm not the only one brave enough to admit he ran out of the fuel.

Hey, ship happens, at least nobody came home half a pint low on blood. You should check out my Maiden Voyage From Hell thread assuming it's still there. I got so bored during my time out I was going back and reading old stuff just to stay awake. Seems like some stuff that used to be there has disappeared.

I too am going to be cruising that area in a couple of weeks. Thanks for the info. Maybe next time you are that way me and/or Carl can give you the three hour tour.

Sorry to hear about the props I did the same at the CDR ..Nothing like that to ruin your day but good to hear you had fun and made it home ok ...Next time we'll catch you some where ...Half way maybe????

Thanks for the link Pascal! :)

Hey bird we need to add a little Zanex to your bird seed.

Sorry to hear about the drive train! The Edison-Ford Winter Home Museum is a cool place I have not been there in 15-20 years but I am trying to put together a road trip down that way soon.
