Those of you that bought K&N filters for your 8v71ti's, what size did you use. I know the flange size is 4" but what diameter and length did you use. Thanks, John

Sky, you have different filters than mine. I have a metal cap in the front. The springs are attached to the metal cap then pulled to the base. I bought them at West Marine for 68.00.

Thanks to all of you for the responses. This is a great site. Seven, by the way those filtersyou got at west are now up to $99.00 each with no discount. The K&N were $57.89 each,still not to bad. John
 
I forgot to tell you I have a port supply card which got them down a bit. I still need two to replace the port ones. Where did you get them for the price?
 
I bought the K&N filters from the K&N website. They are in Riverside Ca. and had free shipping, 2 days to San Diego probably the same for you. John

Sorry, when you said K&N, I thought you meant just a filter, not the ones for Air Seps. I have the Racor CCv's.
 
Sky, I am using the same ones Mike and David suggested with Racor CCV. The one you suggested would also work, thanks for taking the time to send me the link on yours. John
 
I have the same filters, but will probably change them within the next month or so.

At the Hatteras Classic Club Rendezvous (Inner Harbor in September), probably the best presentation (IMHO) was by a diesel guru Bruce Mallinson (owns a 61' Hatt, and his company Pittsburgh Power has been successful for 30-40 yrs?). Bruce went into detail on air and oil filters, turbos and answered dozens of questions. He was definitely not a fan of the K&N's (he called them dirt bike filters). He was a proponent of foam covered filters (I don't remember the brand, but I plan to give him a call to find out).

Also - a side note, one of the coolest things Bruce showed us was a powerful set of magnets that fit around the oil filters to attract metal particles to suspend them until the oil / filters are changed.

BTW the HCC Rendezvous was a great event, so cool to see those Hatts in one place and to meet the owners.
 
Air contamination in our application is almost non-existent when compared to most other uses. Think about construction equipment running in dirt and dust all day, every day. We have nothing like that and that is why the OEM setup really didn't worry about it. The biggest issue for marine engines is an exhaust leak. If you can keep from getting soot back into the intakes, then you have negated the biggest threat to your engine. SO, if you have no exhaust leaks, you don't need much in the way of air filtration. That means that just about any filter will work fine as long as it doesn't restrict air flow. The CCV or AirSep is more about controlling crankcase ventilation and oil mist than air filtration.

Did they say where you can get those magnets? Great idea.
 
Had a friend of a friend give me some of those magnets and I tried them on a small 50 hp diesel. I found that the vibration from the engine would knock some of them off so I gave up. Bigger engine running smother would probably work ok. John

I will try to find out and post here. I'm at FLIBS tomorrow, will look around there. It may be that Bruce at Pittsburgh Power can get them too.
