Well Oscarvan, you're being far too civil. I'd take off my asbestos suit if not for the fact Freeebird has not chimed in yet.
Sorry I was late. :D

Marketing said "the customer wants a wider salon!" and the beancounters said "we're not building a new mold! 1510 or the highway" And Jack was in the middle making a 58' wide body on a 1510..... not gonna work. Finally everyone gave in, they went to 18-6 and viola the later 58 (with the side decks) was once again an aesthetic masterpiece.
Actually, the 1510 was FOR the highway, and once Hatteras moved down the road (to where there was water), the 18' beam was no longer an issue.

Crap, I knew that. Well, still blaming the bean counters. Should have moved sooner. :p

The Elada 85..... Interesting. Actually find it rather sexy in a strange sort of way. The big test, of course, will be if it's still cool 5, 20, 50 years from now.

Another Viking Lazzara design

Okay, I’ll say it. I like Jim’s boat, and it’s in really nice shape... despite its shape. Then again, I like Winnebagels too.

I like the earlier Lazarra designs

I like the Gulfstar too. Saw what appeared to be a nice one that I thought might work for Robby and Brenda, but it had Perkins 540T’s. Everyone I asked said parts are pricey and hard to come by.

The first 49's had V8 Perkins. Then they went to 6v71ti's, and later to Cats. My dad bought hull number 7 which was one of the last ones with Perkins in it.

What a strange layout...up steps, now down, up again....down two sets....back up...i'd get lost! Down an awkward ladder to the swim platform. Impossible to dock single-handed.
Maybe for you. :D

You really are getting older. Seems like just yesterday, you were learning to drive and looking for a station wagon. Now you’re worried you’d get lost on a 49’ boat. :D

Our friends have one of those 49 Gulfstars and if you never leave the dock they are a great live aboard layout. 3 good size cabins and a main saloon more like a 53 ED in size. John

I've run the 49 gulfstar a d it's not a bad sea boat especially with stabilizers. Having the bridge up like the 48 hatt is nothing new. Its use of interior space is great. Quality and comfort great.

As for single handling Krush. You need to remember boating is a great way to meet people. Maybe get a woman (if thats your thing) and enjoy the company of others.

We call it a Jungle Gym. Just wait till your hips or knees get old.

We used to manage an American Tug Yacht. Wow, what a work out getting to the forward cabin, Just as bad for the master cabin way down below....
Every little area was on it's own level. Steps to the very next area.

So, it's not a good liveaboard if you ever leave the dock? :D

Seriously, that boat has a TON of living space, even though it has very limited outdoor space for just hanging out. I don't see that as a huge issue for a liveaboard, and I still think it may make a great option for Robby and Brenda. No doubt that huge galley would be a great thing for them. There was one of these at my marina years ago. I think it had CAT's, but I definitely remember how roomy it was. You or anyone else want to offer opinions on those Perkins V8's?

Hours that low could be a mixed blessing, especially when the listing mentions the fact the current owner has been living aboard for almost six years. That could easily translate into the boat has been sitting at the dock for the majority of those six years. Not sure what the deal is with the missing paint on the engines.

The one my friends have has 6-71TI engines.

This is why the Hargrave flush deck is such a great design !!! You Re just steps away from your spring lines with no steps to climb... that Gulfstar isn’t much different in layout and stairs from the 43 Hatteras and many others.

Sure but sometimes you may need to single hand and it s next to have a boat that s easy to singlenhand. Women? Yeah... “honey, I ll go shower and be done by the time we come in”... sure... boat is tied up and wall by the time the shower is over.

And sometimes you may need to go to the fuel dock and don’t necessarily want to wait for someone to help. Once in a while I need to bring the 84 to the Exumas, or come back, and for some reason I ended up alone. Being able to singlenhand is very nice.

The 53MY and any flush deck hatt Is probably the easiest boat to handle because of the design

Here’s the boat. It might run forever, but my only experience with Perkins was in MF tractors from MANY years ago.

https://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1984/gulfstar-49-flybridge-motoryacht-mkiii-3566033/

Half of the sailboats out there run Perkins and those only have 2000hrs on them. It looks pretty good. My dad's was a 1984 also. He had it for ten years and put over 1500hrs on his. I've been out in some pretty nasty seas in it on Lake Michigan an it handled great (and it wasn't stabilized). The CG is really low on that boat. And it had more room in the galley and dinette than my 53. Plus two queen staterooms which we don't have now.

The weak point was the A/C as it had only one unit which was ducted throughout the boat. Other than that, it was great. I liked the single sea chest strainer and sea chest discharges. No thru-hull fittings on that boat.
