Is he crazy?

A friend is talking about buying an 84 foot Hatteras and operating it with just his family. I would think for that size boat you should have a captain and a crew, is he crazy or what?

Depends on how OLD his family is and if they know anything about boating. A man, his wife and if the kids are under 10 yrs of age would not be a good crew.

depends on his experience and what kind of boat it is. if it's a MY with pilothouse, that wouldn't scare me. the procedures are the same than a 50 to 60 footer, you just have an extra 30' behind

if it's a sportfish then you need someone to helm out with the lines.

it's all about following the right procedure, using spring lines, etc...

now his insurers will probably disagree with the above...

Talk is cheap but owning and operating a late 80's vintage MY of this size will be a very expensive adventure. Only a very few of the 84's were built and it will probably need both engines majored and most systems upgraded or replaced. As for handeling it? An experienced "captain" and mate can do it.

I wouldn't hesitate to do it with me and the Admiral. But since I'll never be able to afford such a boat, it doesn't really matter!

A captain and two crew and you can handle about anything, less than that and you will have some surprises from time to time. I expect his insurance company will insist on a certain level of experience or else have a real captain at the helm. It would not be prudent to try an operate a vessel of this size with no experience.

Can't believe these things even sell... one ugly boat, looks like the boat was doing 80kts and ran over "The Joker" from the old batman series. Looks like it's laughing at you because you bought it... and then will want to trade it for a 53 foot old hatt, and you just know the guy driving doesn't have a clue what he's doing... surprised he got it out of the slip

Come on guys what would you do with an 80 footer with a 6 foot draft or so, i mean you'd need to flood the grand canyon to be able to boat anywhere... and only some fuel docks will even handle you.. perfect boats are the 40 - 60ish foot ranges... Anything in side that range will be perfect for anything you wanna do with a family, if you have more boat than that, send me your extra cash i'd love to add that "yacht fish fishing deck to my boat"

YIKES !! This is just off the ways at Palmer Johnson in Sturgeon Bay Wi. last year. They are world renowned builders of custom aluminum yachts ( Fexas, Hargraves etc ) Its easy to see why they arent long for this world with crap like this ! Probably $15M and as high end / high tech as you'd find anywhere but its still like riding a Honda --- Feels good until somebody you know sees you doing

Lot of truth to that, of course, and that's one reason the 53/58 are so popular - they don't have too much draft and they will fit in most marinas. Seems to me that IF we could ever afford an 80+ footer, though I'd love to have one of Hargrave's Burgers in that range, I don't know what the heck I'd DO with it.

On the other hand, there are plenty of REALLY BIG yachts around and their owners don't seem to have any trouble doing things with them. Yes, they have multi-millions of dollars to work with; I suspect that pretty much solves the problem!

A friend used to own an old 120' steel single screw. We only needed a second crew member to operate it, and that included taking it through the locks. Not difficult at all, but my friend is very experienced with big boats (he currently drives an 85' tug in Alaska). Here in the NW, you can get a big boat virtually anywhere you can drive a small one. Lots of wide-open deep places!

Personally, my dream boat is a 120' Delta. I'll never have the money, but dreams are cheap.
