Is DIY recharge of R22 on Cruisair units doable ? Also....

Servicing and installing AC systems successfully seems to depend a lot on experience. If you think about all the trouble you'd have to go to in order to learn to do it, get the equipment, get the Freon (whichever one is the right one) etc, you are better off getting someone who knows how to do it. You can clean the coils, flush the drains, make sure the seawater inlets and pumps are clear etc. Beyond that, get a professional. You will be ahead in the long run and short run as well.

BTW if the system is icing up, I don't think that means it needs more refrigerant- but, again, get someone who knows what they are doing with these systems.

Icing up is typically a sign of low refrigerant levels.

Agree...just can't at the moment...everyone within 50 miles that is familiar witboat AC system is backed up 3 weeks. I'll check out the suspect air handler fan later today...I haven't already since as mentioned it's a PITA to even take a peek at the thing the way Viking sealed it under the flybridge bench.

I suspect in the end I'll find the problem is a combination of the seized fan and being low on refrigerant. I say this as when I first took possession of the boat the second salon handler didn't work then either and yet I don't think it was icing up then.

Did the surveyor find that bad fan motor?

Sky! You really need to lighten up on the surveyor, after all it is a Viking. A bad fan motor was probably the least of the problems.

Don't know yet the motor is bad... I am just assuming that is the most likely reason no air blows from the second handler... could be a disconnected or corroded wire. Surveyor did mention that vent had no flow. I didn't think much of it at the time as the cold air from the first vent seemed enough to cool the entire salon.

There is also a problem with the Cruisair unit that blows into the forward port stateroom, which he pointed out as well. On that one, the compressor clicks on and off constantly and yet the digital display shows no error codes. Have yet to investigate as the other two forward units cool that stateroom just fine as long as it's door is open.

Hmmm...wonder if you will be chastised by the young man (Tony?) that is typically horrified when someone makes fun of someone elses boat ?

It's ok.... I'm lucky to even be allowed on here with a non Hatteras creation...

I only lurk here, so I have no idea, is there a Viking forum?

As I'm trying to ask no Viking specific questions here, but only inquiries that relate to the mechanical systems of most large MY's I fail to see the problem. Other than the curious fact that you find it impossible to ignore me and are like an obscessed chihuahua constantly yapping at my ankles.

More like the concerned homeowner that sees a renter moving in next door thats probably a pot grower or meth lab. You know bad things will come from them its just a matter of when.

How you liking that Viking site by the way? Im sure they know more about your boat than we do.

I'm not aware of a Viking (or Bertram, or whatever) site that has the depth of yacht mechanical and systems knowledge as found here. Although admitedly I haven't looked all that hard.

If there is a vote function here, someone please point out how to enable it and you guys can vote onme staying or going.

Too many liberals. Your wanted as much as the illegal aliens but we cant get a vote to get rid of them either.

Start the search, Im sure there is a viking site. maybe even one that will tolerate you. Just think of all the knowledge and experience on the floating apartments you'll find there.

I vote for you staying. Now that you are a fellow sufferer, it would be cruel to kick you out. Besides, we never kick anyone out of here. It's not like we can afford to. LOL

But we have banned and driven others away. Not a past to be proud of and not something that should be repeated.

Jim. You Are So predictable.

I think he should be sent to others of his own kind.

For my possible humor, what is your vision of where "others of my own kind" would be found ? Since you seem to have me figured out...what exactly is "my kind" for that matter ?

Also, other than your bizarre annoyances, what actual "harm" is my presence here causing ?

And still waiting on an answer to my question "do you think there are too many liberals on this site?"....cat got your tongue ?

Are you unable to read my last post on this thread?

Use a bit of intelligence (borrow it from the wife) and your bound to figure it out all by yourself.

Maybe you should start your own site.

Floating apartment owners forum?

OK everybody, play nice or recess will be cancelled tomorrow....Liberal? what's a liberal??? That lubricates the transmission doesn't it?

I figured once you were backed in a corner you'd either ignore the question or come up with some insulting way to not answer it....and sure enough. Pathetic.

Finally got to the air handler today. Sure enough the second blower wasn't turning. The surprise is that I just barely touched the squirrel cage and it started up just fine and has run fine ever since even after numerous stops. Probably a combination of the bearings needing a touch of oil and the motor start capacitor getting weak. Could buy a whole new blower (Dayton 1TDR8) for about $150 from any Grainger distributor.

And that completely cured the compressor freezing up. The air handler coils are still freezing just a bit....not nearly as much as before, but some. Could be dirty I suppose but they look clean just to look at them.

----------------

So now the remaining Cruisair issue is the 7,000 BTU compressor for the forward port stateroom. (on that one the fan in the air handler works fine) If I cut it on "cool" at the digital panel and then go check out the compressor in the engine room, what happens is it seems to start up just fine but only runs for 8 seconds and shuts down. Then perhaps 30 seconds later it starts up again, runs 8 seconds and shuts down..ad infinitum if I let it. I moved some of the electronics and capacitor wires back of forth on their terminals in case of microscopic corrosion issues...didn't help.

So what do you think ? Electronics problem, weak capacitor, or more likely just shutting itself down due to low R22 levels to protect the compressor from damage ?
