Interior work....revisited

We used the Minwax Tung Oil and Red Mahog. stain and got great results, except for areas that appear to be old water damage around the windows in the salon...they are very pale and won't take stain.

I was concerned about sanding for fear of going through the surface veneer and it looking even worse...suggestions?

I have lightly sanded the veneer with no problem - use something like 320 grit. You will have to sand enough to get past the old sealer. It shouldn't take much.

Or, instead, you could try the same technique that is used for faux painting:

Using the stain and a fine paint brush or the tip of a cloth, you can lightly apply some stain and "feather" it into the surrounding color. Then, let it dry completely - do not rub it off. It will take at least a day to dry. This is essentially screw-up proof since you can just wipe it off with a rag and some paint thinner.

Then you can apply the finish over it. Apply the finish gently because it will tend to remove the stain if you apply it to heavily.

Thanks Mike, I'll try it this weekend....hopefully sanding will allow the area to take stain.
