Installing Gauges on Aircon Condensers

I've been looking at the aircons all week. With warmer spring weather the old three knob thermostats are kicking in and all but one aircon is cooling. So that's great news.

The bad news is that one of the recently regassed aircons is not working and after paying $2000 for a fellow to charge and check all the aircons, he left a valve open and it all bubbled out. Like the gas, this serviceman has evaporated, never to be seen again.

Another technician is coming to gas this unit in 10 days. R22 is now banned in Australia. The R22 replacement refrigerant is R438A. It is super expensive.

Because of space in the genset room, I've never been able to watch how the Cruisairs are charged with gas. I'm wondering if someone could give me a step by step idea of how its done. Assume I have a set of gauges, R438A and a vacuum pump. Is the vacuum pump always used when topping up or only when the system is completely empty? When would you use nitrogen? None of this for a marine aircon is on Youtube.
