I have a 34c. want to add transom mounted hawse pipes. Since we added mooring cover we cant X the lines from gunwall mounted pipes, lines chafe the cover.

I notice some boats have hawse pipes mounted very low on transome, closer to the deck. Appears this may double as emergency deck drain. Any thoughts on this? Is there a hawse pipe that is finished on both sides for this application?

Our boat has very poor deck drains, only 1.25" holes on deck in rear corners draining to through hull fittings. This is ok for rain etc. but would do little for an emergency. Might consider cutting hawse pipe closer to deck, however this would appear to cause other issues such as water intrusion when backing down etc.

This may be a silly response, but what about installing a couple cleats above the swimstep? If you can get inside and provide decent backing, seems easier than cutting through.

My 36c has two sets of Hawse pipes at the stern. First set in the normal location. The second set are in the stern just under the gunnel and work just fine there. You really don't want them low enough to act as scuppers. No need and then the angle to the cleats wouldn't really be right. I have never seen ones finished on both sides, but I'm sure a fitting like that could be found. The actual transom there is not more than an inch or so think, so the pipe comes through and gives a good enough fairlead for the line and the through bolts use washers and acorn nuts. Looks ok and does the job.

will mount high. was not sure how thick the transom is at that point. think hull is .5" thick then there is the inner liner.

Dan, any pointers?

the 2 rear deck drains or if you pull off the stern light can give you an idea of how thick your transom is. i seem to remember my old 34 being about 1/2".

We added hawser pipes to the transom of our 46C some years back. They are a must when mooring at floating docks and are great for holding your power cords, dockside water hoses, etc. You can see them in a couple of the photos under "capten" in the photo gallery.

To get a finished product on both the inside and outside simply use two fittings per side (4 total) - one inboard and one outboard. We got ours from SAMS. Just pick the size you want!

Just added new hawse pipes. The original Hatt pipes mounted one half from the inside the other from the outside with a seam in the middle. Found new ones at www.sailorsams.com. The are finished in and out but the outside fits into a recess in the inner flange. It comes about one inch long thus it needs to machined to the correct thickness of the transome. John.

Steve, were the orgininal three scuppers glassed over on Cathrine Mae? Electra has one on either side and one dead center. They are about five inches wide and one inch high. Would not suggest mounting hawse pipes low. Whenever I back down hard, I get water in the cockpit from the scuppers and they are about 6-8 inches above the waterline depending on fuel load. I have seen hawse pipes mounted in the transom on some 34 Cs, but just under the gunwale. Did you move the boat today?
George ;)

Moved boat on monday, got in at 7pm, got a very late start. had starter problem and had to replace starter before we left.

Some 34c' had scuppers and some dont. Decided to add hawser in proper location just under gunnel.

Hey Steve
Been away and really busy with house stuff!!!!! I added two to each corner one in transom and one in the side hull. Also close the original in the top deck. I have been very happy with this arrangement. I know what you mean about the drains my boat had a extra drain added to each corner. So one drains out the transom one one out the side hull. I keep that since you can always plug them with a cedar plug. A hawse is not easy to plug. Hope this helps sorry I was so late. Dan

thanks Dan.

How is the repower going?

Well it had to take a back seat to all the other stuff going on but should be back at it next week. Old motors are out and bilges cleaned sanding and paint is next!

I need to replace or rechrome 2 original transom hawse pipes from my '72, 36C. Will it be easier/less expensive to have them rechromed or to replace them. If rechromed, does anyone know who to contact? If replacing, where to look, as I didn't see the same ones at sailorsams.com. I would think that they could be located for less than $100 ea.

Thanks

Someone told me recently that just about the only place that re-chromes anymore is Harley-Davidson. I don't know if this is true, but you could check with them.

From my experience, most any good bike shop has a connection to a chrome shop. My Harley dealer has a couple of places for chrome work and powder coating. It might be the easiest place to make a connection unless you know of a good plating place near you.

Thats probably the case. I think the environmental regulations regarding plating have put most of the old shops out of business. That and the fact that our new cars now have a piece of plastic where the bumpers used to be.

Have you checked with SAMS on replacements? That's where I purchased mine a few years ago.

As far as re-chroming - to my knowledge there are a lot of places that still do this. One of the best I've seen is an outfit in PA - Paul's Chrome Plating, Inc. (no relation to me). They have done work for some of my Corvette buddies and it is outstanding! Triple plating, ridiculous shine and depth, and very durable. Check them out - http://www.paulschrome.com/

i priced rechrome. not worth it, more expensive than buying new. We found some SS hawse pipes and installed, got oversized ones so shore power connector can pass through. got them from Defender. nice thing about ss is you can pull and re polish any time.
