With the Feds move to discontinue incandescent light bulbs in mind ... do you think that they will be doing away with 12v bulbs and should we stock up? As far as I have heard there are no 12v florescent bulbs ... or are there? Thanks.

Actually, the US is not phasing out incandescent bulbs. The hype/media reports have, as usual, little to do with what's really happening.

For the most important aspect to boaters - it has no effect at all since it doesn't affect light bulbs at all at/below 40W ratings (or above 150W). And all the legislation requires is that bulbs within that category be 30 percent more efficient than they are now. So if GE, or whoever, can make a 100W incandescent bulb 30 percent more efficient than current ones (as of the 2007 legislation), then there will still be 100W incandescent bulbs. But it will have no effect on "specialty bulbs" or "appliance bulbs." 100W bulbs are the first that have to meet the new standard.

The whole thing is another media "makeover."

But it is true that if you use a lot of 60W bulbs for your reading lights or whatever, and nobody actually comes up with a more efficient incandescent, there is a good possibility that you will have to switch to florescents at some point.

Thanks Mike ... as usual ... we can always rely on our fellow HOF members ... someone usually knows what the real answers are!!!!

Regarding 12v florescents . . .
I replaced my OEM Perko incandescent above the aft deck with a light from Alpenglow.com and could not be more pleased. It is a combination white florescent and red led with 2 light levels at each color.

I do not care for being told what to do, but this is an excellent choice and unlike the CFL's it is assembled in the USA.

Specialty bulbs are not affected so if you still want a standard 100 watt bulb, just buy a rough service bulb and you'll be good to go.

Yes, there are several 12V flourescent bulbs. !2V systems are used in the sleepers of most Class 8 semi trucks. I have two in my Volvo.
