  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
45' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1968 - 1975)
Well, taking lessons from Yachtsmanbill, I have taken pictures throughout my entire haulout process. I planned on coming out for some thru-hull replacement, shaft hose replacement, and bottom paint. 51 days later, I ended up with new shafts, ALL new thru-hulls, seacocks, cutlass bearings, rudder box bolts, trim tab recesses, Bennett trim tab conversion, and...a whole lot more. I'll add pictures as I get them off the camera.

Jason

And more...

I had no idea that in 1969 they used foam coring in the transom...interesting!

The bottom photo is of old transducer holes before being fiberglassed in.

New sea cock for main engines with all new fittings (except the strainer, which I had bead blasted).

The next two I am re-doing the boot stripe to update things a bit.

Cored below waterline? I never would have thought it either. Frankly, I'm a bit disappointed.

BTW, from the pic, it looks like Baltec balsa core, not foam.

Hot Damn J !! What an undertaking! I am glad to see the new valve installed.
On the transom cutout pic, is that water running out? Good job beveling the glass back too !!
I guess I should count my blessings; everything I look at on mine is pretty solid for a '74 even with 30 plus years of PO neglect! Just about everything on mine is cosmetic... but thats 58 feet of cosmetics! ws

Hey Jason,

What a beaut! Thanks for taking the pics and letting us follow along! Every single time I learn something from you guys...

Thanks for the pictures...
What prompted the replacements? What did you find that lead to all those changes? And did you place something over the shaft log so if it drips underway it doesn't get sprayed around...such as a piece of rubber inner tubing of half a piece of big PVC???

It's an illusion. There is a puddle of water on the tarp from hosing the boat off, and a cut on each side of the new hole which looks like water dripping down. FWIW, there WAS a bit of water in there that ran out for maybe 5 minutes after cutting it open...not too bad after 39 years of being in the water!

Replacements...well, I had to replace main seacocks, because the orininal gate valves were seized in the open position. The trim tab worm gear had rusted itself together, and no longer worked...so rather than repair old technology, I upgraded to the new style Bennett's. As for a spray shield over the stuffing boxes, I haven't done anything yet...especially because on the way home (25 miles of slow cruising) I constantly had to adjust the GFO so it didn't get too hot, or leak too much, but I WILL get something over it soon.

Here's some as she gets wet again...

I discovered either coring or at least a void in the layup on both our '86 36C and my son's '83 32 foot Hat. We discovered this when drilling the required holes for installing our LED underwater lights. Only one through hole is required and 3 screw holes. On both boats a decent amount of water came out of the screw pilot holes. I could blow through one and get water from the other 2. I don't understand either!:(

As for the coring, it was definitely a foam material. I have the cut outs in my garage, and along the bottom was a much higher density foam than what was behind the transom itself. The bottom "strip" of foam was probably 1" by 1" and went along the line where the hull ended and the transom began, so right along the 90 degree angle was high density foam.

Here's a few more off the other memory card...First is of the "new" trim tabs. Next is the running gear; new shaft, reworked propellers, cutlass bearings, and notice the propeller nuts (little one first). Next is the night before launch.

Cape Marina was really good to me. They pretty much left me alone, and never bothered any of the outside vendors I had to the boat. They also let me hang in the slings overnight so I could paint where the stands/blocks were, and let the paint dry. I felt that it was a good place for DIY, for those in the central FL area.

WoW ---What a good looking boat !!!!! What boat yard did the work or did you do it yourself? I looked at a 46 Hatt that had a zinic installed in the transome and it eventually leaked and rotted out a large section of core. The surveyor said to never install a zinic in the transome that had Balsa core .

Thanks! I did 99% of the work myself. I was hauled at Cape Marina, but they did nothing except haul and block the boat. My fiberglass guy filled in the transducer holes, and installed the tab recesses. I did everything else, with my mechanic checking to be sure it was done correctly. For fiberglass work, I have found no one better than Hancrafters Fiberglass.

I pulled the old transom zinc bolts out, glassed them in, and drilled new ones, as I could no longer find zincs to fit the old bolt pattern. The transom is cored, but NOT with wood...it's some type of foam...and after 39 years, only a few drips came out, proving to me that it won't be the source of a problem for quite some time i the future. Besides, where else would I have mounted a hull zinc?

Jason

I should have started with these pictures...so you know where I started this project from. I look at the boat everyday now, and I can't believe it's the same one as what you're about to see.

Hurricane damage? How long have you been at this?

Hey Sky. Yeah, the PO didn't do ANYTHING to secure her in '04. I bought her the day after Wilma passed through here in '05, and have been working on it ever since.

Hey J... what are the 2 extra bolts on the rear strut just above the cutlass bearing for? Is there a zinc mounted inside the V? Also, whats the anti fouling paint? Looks pretty copper rich!! ws
