I appreciate shared experience posted here,
And what I can learn of value.

Hi. To Answer a couple questions; all most all my parts come from the USA, I have paid a small fortune in shipping. But then, if I could get it here, Singapore or Australia the prices are so much more expensive that it is still cheaper to buy from the US. With regards to my trip from Singapore, it was only 420 nautical miles of open ocean, then the next 600 miles up the coast of Borneo. We (me and two good friends) spent a couple days at the Republic of Singapore yacht club getting the boat ready for the journey. Changed all the oils and filters. Checked all the electronic (all most every fuse was blown (might have been hit with lightning during its voyage from Florida) filled the water and fuel. taking an extra 4 45 gal plastic drums in the cockpit. Total: a little over 800 gals or 3000 liters. After loading tons of good food, water and beer onto the boat and everything was ready to go, we hit the town of Singapore. We didn't know how far the boat would go on the fuel we had so the plan was if we made it half way and still had half the fuel we would keep going. (I like plans)The next morning (after the night before) we fell into the boat, cleared immigration and customs, started the engines and off we went. Singapore shipping traffic was massive, little tiny Hatteras going 13 knots amongst huge ships moving at 25 knots plus. The day drifted into night, the night was beautiful, only a slight sea and a few clouds. By morning we had to change coarse a little to avoid a large squall, then back on track. Mid afternoon, time to put the drums of fuel into the main tank. %#^*@ transfer pump does not work, so we had to siphon the fuel manually, that took time and a few beers. 36 hours, a little over 400 miles and we entered the river to Kuching Malaysia, dropped the Anchor, had a few beers and settled down for a four hour nap.......

Keep the photos coming if you can. This is terrific midwinter boat porn for all of us in the frozen USA.

I can only imagine the challenge of painting your boat in those conditions.
How did it work out? And cost?
You are doing a great job. Good luck.

Hmmm... that's neat. I wonder if I could build one of those....

Hi all, I have been frequenting this site for over three years now, ever since buying an old boat. Over that time I have got a lot of good information from many of you, so thanks.

I live on the other side of the world with no real support except a couple manuals, internet browsing and what I have found on Sam’s Marine.

I bought the old girl in Florida, shipped it to Singapore then drove it 1000 nautical miles to where I live on the island of Borneo. After a year of nursing the old boat along I decided (rather I needed) to haul out and rejuvenate her the best I could. She has been out of the water for well over two years and now finally is back on the sea. I would not have been able to undertake this project without the excellent craftsmanship and assistance I’ve been getting from a Filipino man named Ruben. Who has done most of the fiberglass, wood repairs and painting.

It’s been a massive learning curve. Some things I knew about, most I had little idea. I had only ever been on a sport fish boat like this once and may have consumed a few beers on that trip so really did not grasp the big picture of what lies below the painted decks.

By now your asking what boat. Answer; 1982 Hatteras 46C hp. Twin DD 8V92ti

When I was in West Palm Beach in the spring of 2010 it seemed like purchasing a boat was a good idea. (I had been consuming beer). And with help from a yacht broker the decision was made to buy. (funny how a broker can be so helpful). I’m often asked “if you knew then what you know now, would you have done the same thing?” I’ve always found that question to be a little self serving, in that the person asking is basically telling you that they wouldn’t have done what you have. But, a question asked should be a question answered, “YES”

Having this boat has been quite a challenge, and I have had loads of enjoyment ripping it apart, and then learning how to put it back together. A little stressful at times, but hey, we all need a little stress.

I will be posting some pictures for your entertainment.

Cheers, P
Shes Beautiful. wish i had that kind of time to put in mine!!

Hatteras should send him a bunch of free stuff !!!

Great post! It's always good to hear about adventures and experiences, I am sure you will have many memories from your boat. Good luck and happy cruising. Thanks for the pictures to.

I second that!
Plus a beer company sending some product.
Then Hatteras do a profile of the voyage so that a new generation gets to know why a Hatteras is DIFFERENT to any other boat.
Cheers

To answer a previous question, I used DuPont Imron to paint the boat. Used about 14 gallons (including high temp thinner. And about 5 gallons on primers (tough coat and high build, both epoxy) Not sure how much I spent, things like that scare me. Here's a couple pics of the helm.

If Hatteras was now, the company it once was, they would.
Thanks to Roger W's Hatteras school, and Sam's, I have had the good fortune to meet several of the fine people who used to work for and were Hatteras Yachts as we wish to still see it. The men who would like to resurrect the 53MY, and the company that built it, would probably embrace and capitalize on Osprey's very impressive adventure, and the capability of a boat which allowed him to do it. But I fear that men who would appreciate that, no longer have influence over the company.

The original glare shield on the fly-bridge was held in place by several metal angles, which left a gap for water to get in and stress cracked the Plexiglas. My Main man Ruben made up a channel for the new glare shield to slip into. Held in place with fiberglass dowels and sikaflex. Plexiglas easily cut with jig saw, filed and sanded edges and bent very slowly using heat gun.

Looks good.
My experience the acrylic aft deck enclosure taught me that you can tun a torch flame along the cut edge which makes it clear and rounds the sharp edges.
