Hallo to all HATTFRIENDS!!

Thanks to JMGIII I have visited the Sam's marine web store site about a thread concerning windows replacement and I have found a very interesting page about Hynautic steering system.

I have to say that in the last years I noticed that my steering was particullary hard...every time more hard and my thought was: "the boat is old and....." just now I can say that was WRONG!!!
For last 4 years I have checked periodically the level into the Hynautic reservoir tank and everything seemed to be ok...but I didn't know that IT WAS NECESSARY PRESSURIZING THE TANK AT 20-30PSI!!!!!

Just today I have given a check with intstrument and it work at " zero"!!
By now, what you suggest me?? pressurizing and stop or it may be dangerous as also the previous owner say that he never added pressurizing in 25 years???
Change oil following the instruction on sams' marine web site store or leave the oil as it is now??

What is the correct typology of oil ?? I need to buy it here in Italy, please could you suggest me some oil option??

thanks a lot

If you can see fluid in the reservoir take a bicycle pump and pump the pressure up to 20 PSI. Maybe that's all you need to do. Ron

The oil to use is MilSpec 5606. If there is no pressure in the system, you run the risk of letting air into the system. The pressure serves no purpose other than to keep air out. It does not make the steering any easier and 25psi is not any better than 5psi.

I would first check the oil leverl, then add some pressure to the reservoir. Next bleed the system to get any air out. If, after all that, you still have hard steering, you may have the wrong oil in there.

thank to all.

I will try to pressurizing at 20 psi.
Also, here in Italy is very difficult to fin MIL spec 5606...people suggest to change oil with a normal oil for flap...I have seriuos doubt...what your opinion?
thank you

5606 is a very light aviation hydraulic oil. You might find it at an airport supply. If not, you can buy the oil from Teleflex.
