  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' LRC (1975 - 1981)
Well, I decided to bite the bullet and rebuild Kismet's hydraulic steering myself. While waiting for the seal kit to arrive, I started cleaning it up. There's a heck of a lot of brass on these things!

And built like tanks! Cleaning up nicely on the buffing wheel. Should look like brand new when complete.

They don't make 'em like they used to! 1978...wow nothing like restoring a relic!

I'm in the process of rebuilding mine too. I'm in need of the rubber boot. Any ideas as to where I might find one?

Teleflex (Hynautic) was no help whatsoever. They even told me that they never manufactured my cylinder. Funny...it says Hynautic, and is a part number that corresponds to the rebuild kits.

Thanks, Jeff. I'll see if it'll fit my cylinder.

Yours looks great polished like that...I'll have to get busy on mine!

I purchased the rubber boots from Steve at Sams.

I wish I had known that Sam's carried them. I think Sam's has a downfall in their website design...it's far too complicated to find parts, if they're listed at all. I'd much prefer give Steve the business, but an internet search should allow me to find those parts without making a telephone call.

Email to Sam's works well for part availability and pricing.

I feel the same way. I'd much prefer to send it to Steve, but it's normally out of sight, out of mind. Google is my friend. Instantly find what I'm looking for (well, maybe not instanty with an older Hatteras!), check a couple of prices, and check out.

Sams would be well served to upgrade their shopping experience. That said, I understand (having built and run many webstores) that's easier said than done. All it takes is $. Plus the fact that Sams has a finite client base, many of whom would prefer to make a phone call.

I just had mine redone at Rose's Marine in Gloucester Mass, $120,well worth it.

I rebuilt my k22 yesterday with a kit from sams. The worst part was making the special tool for the 4 nuts that hold the ram together. the rebuild kit was the best $50 I've spent. Thank you for the info on this.

I just call Sam's up, they have my hull number on file and always know what questions to ask if the part isn't OEM. Plus, they usually can give advice on install tricks and the occasioanl "you know you'll need one of these and two of those too".... "uh no, I didn't know that". Much faster end-to-end process than a Google search.

Another great source for all things Hynautic (parts and advice) is Gary Sorenson at Marine Controls, who is a Hynautics distributor. Also a good Naiad guru and about anything else hydraulic. 828-508-4201
