  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
52' CONVERTIBLE (1983 - 1990)
My Hynautic slave cylinder on my 52' 1984 Convertible is leaking. Apparently at the seal where the piston goes in and out. Has anyone ever replaced or rebuilt one of these? If so any recommended sources? I live in New Bern NC.

Thanks in advance!

Steering or shift/throttle?

Steering (connects to rudders). Not at the boat now. Will try to get a pic soon.

Mine was rebuilt a few years back on my ‘84 52C which means you are due since we are only a few HIN apart most likely. (Curious: what SN are you?)

Easy fix: lift deck hatches, both ends unbolt, take to *any* industrial hydraulic repair place (not just marine), and say “rebuild cylinder, please”. Take care not to damage rudder sender if present, and get some new cotter pins in advance of reinstallation. After reinstalled, double check area is free of junk on shelf since people park random items there—need space for free operation.

Sounds easy! I will also have them make new lines that attach to the cylinder at the same time.

My hull # is HATCS312M84H

Thanks for the help!

The lines are supposed to be very low stretch hose. Parker MHS6 I believe is best. Fittings are available that can be reused incase you want to be able to fix it in the field.

PM me if you need more info.

Give boatsteer.com a try. They just rebuilt mine, from my 85 45c cost was very reasonable around $450 for complete rebuilt with factory parts and new machined rod. It came back looking new, it had been glass beaded, polished, and fully bench tested.

I should mention, it is now back in the boat, for the second time as a hydraulic shop rebuilt it the first time and it failed on install.

I thought I would save a few bucks and paid twice.

The folks at boatsteer were simply great to deal with.

I rebuilt one 10 years ago for my dad at a local hydraulic shop for about $50.

$450 is insane.

Mine is HATCS304M84E which I believe means #4 of the 300 series stretched 50’s (as they reportedly got to 52’ by increasing the fishing deck by 2 feet). I think the “E” is month of manufacture or May of 1984 (5th letter).

If true, yours could be hull #12 made in August of 1984. From elsewhere I think hull #3 went to the Pacific Northwest but mine sold first, possibly since I am galley-down and went to San Diego or LA.

Steve McPhearson said the 52C was enormously popular at about 200 made—maybe 190 hulls.

My early production has a few quirks and misfitting things, and engines re-designated from a 46HP since they apparently needed this one out the door.
