  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
Can anyone confirm that the Hynautic helm on a 1981 DCMY 43 is an H20? This was info I got from Sam's Marine parts dept. Can't find in my manual. Wanting to order a seal kit. Need to confirm the helm number. As well, anyone have experience with a SeaStar kit vs Hynautic?

The pumps on both of my helms (1979 43DC) are Hynautic H-21-S units. I had these rebuilt in 2009 for $150.00 for both by Southern Charm in Illinois 800-745-0765. Great guys to work with and very quick turn around. Not sure if they are the same as yours. Mine had the numbers stamped into the body of the units on the back. Hope this helps.

I'd send mine in for that price.

No they're not rocket science but can easily be screwed up. If you make a mistake it's hard to get it back in sync.

I agree; if you disassemble the pump you can get it out of sync and it will not work. However, replacing seals does not require disassembling the pump mechanism itself. The only reason you would have to do that is if there is internal damage caused by debris or moisture in the system which is very unlikely.

It IS possible, if you are a bit careless or unlucky, to accidentally dump the various balls/springs/pistons (7 of each if I remember correctly) if you were to, say, drop the pump or turn it over with the cover off. If you do that...you WILL need the instructions for proper reassembly unless you have a couple of days available to reinstall them in the correct location by trial/error! :)

Sams has build sheets on most of these boats. Steve looked up the build sheets for my particular hull number and not only told me what clamps were used on my exhaust, but how many and who made them. My point is, I would trust what they told you.

Okay guys. All good info and advice. Good to know. Thanks! As Scott suggests, for that cost alone, sending out for repair makes most sense.

Thanks for this. Will check in with Southern Charm. Appreciate the suggestion and info.

It's should be stamped on the body. Not the easiest to find, but it's there. I think the seal kit is just some o-rings and all that matters is the shaft size, but I only glanced at it once.

Update on Southern Charm: For what it's worth...spoke with Charlie at Southern Charm. He still has Southern charm, but the price seems to have gone up. It looks like you got a steal or maybe it was the bad economy in 2009. The price is now $200 a piece. Quite a step up. Relocated to Pinnellas Park, FL. Maybe moving from Illinois to Florida he discovered pirate economics.

That is only a little over a 4% increase per year. He incurred moving expenses, insurance rate, labor, and other costs increases over that 8 year time span, it does seem like a fair price based on those factors.

Better check your math. The original post by eze2bme showed the cost to be $150 for both ($75 each). That's a 20.8% increase per year based upon the new pricing. Inflation has been less than 2% per year easily for the past 8 years. Seems high to me.

I misread it I thought it was $150.00 for each. My error.
