I have two gear controls that are begining to weep at the shaft. I was going to rebuild them and was advised against it by the guys who were selling me the parts. They said that in the case of a gear sender it is always better to buy new because the Al body of the sender gets worn out and it will allow some (run out) movement of the shaft which will end up leaking again soon. The rebuild parts are $50-60, the new sender is $399. Has anyone ever rebuilt gear senders with success???..........Pat

If there are no replaceable bearings for on the shafts. Then I would agree to buy new. Steel shafts on bare aluminum is a P/Poor design. They're going to get their money some way. New seals on worn shafts in worn bearing areas will only leak in short time. You would have to (guesstimate), figure how much more time (use) you get for $60. bucks and your time. Before it starts leaking again.

I've rebuilt lots of them with no trouble. Feel the shafts for play then decide.

Next upgrade for me will be air controls. We use them on the tugs and love them. All the plumbing is in place so it won't be much of a job.

How much run out is acceptable ? I know there is a bushing on the lever side that can be replaced but how do you tell if the body itself is too shot to rebuild ??.........Pat

I don't think there's a spec for it. Just pull it apart and check it it's a bushing so there's going to be some play but it can't be flopping around in there.
