Particularly bad day in the office, day dreaming about the future....

Would a full displacement hull like the LRC handle towing a 27' ~6000# center console better than say a CPMY?

Either boat will tow it fine but, having a boat in tow can be a pia. Some drag nice and straight and some seemed like they want to pass you up. It can be rather nerve racking

It will be fine since you ll be at hull speed anyway. Towing a tender is a pita as you pretty much need someone just to handle the tender when you get somewhere. And someone to keep an eye on it under way

How does your 53 run with the 6cta?

You need a bridle and poly floating rope. It helps to keep the outboards slightly lowered for a little drag to keep it from fishtailing.

I usually tow a 17ft Bristol skiff with my 48LRC. My average cruising speed is about .5 knots slower while towing. I use towing rig from Ropeinc.com. Fully deployed it about 200 ft including bridle.

That is a large tow. We (just the two of us) towed a 13' behind the '85 43' MY and it was manageable. Just. It WILL strain your back. We never felt it tugging on the transom. I suspect you will at those sizes and once you get it going be ready for it to coast right into the transom. Hopefully you will have extra help of a muscular sort, and maybe two extras. Especially if you will be doing canals with locks. Under those circumstances I would not tow through.

Is this to relocate the CC to the Bahamas etc.? It can work but I'd be ready to drop the tow prior to pulling in. You may want to get it on a short leash prior to any sort of maneuvering at which point expect contact.

I have seen sporties fly by on the Little Bahama Bank hauling a nice CC well above hull speed. But never something at 27'. Maybe a mega yacht or two crossing to the Exumas had something like that.

I saw a 65 EB towing a yellow CC about 30' in the East River going at least 20 knots.

And if you think about tow boats, Sea Tow or tugs always smaller tow boats than your possibly.

With care you will be fine.

My customers 28 Whaler conquest has a bow ring for towing. No issues. The original 38 Merritt fighting lady has a bow ring to tow. No issues. The easiest solution to close quarters handing is to put a person on it and drop the tow when you get to marinas.

We towed a 22 CC behind our 61 Cmy , fine when my daughter would travel with us as we’d put her in the boat before maneuvering. NEver really knew it was back there at 10 knots and didn’t seem to burn anymore via the Floscans. When my wife I did take it with us we would side tie the cc to aft quarter . We also dropped the cc at anchor and then picked it up with our Whaler a couple times if it was too windy . Get a proper bridle and howser made and make sure the attachment point on the cc is up to the job ..... Pat

Hello,

For many years we towed various sizes of Tenders behind a 63' CPMY. Towed at 11-12 knots and you could not tell a difference. The size of the tow went up as my dad upgraded our tender. We towed a 17' Whaler, then a 17' Mako CC, then a 25' Wellcraft, next a 31' Cuddy Cabin SeaVee and the largest was a 34' Cuddy SeaVee triple engine boat.

These boat were all prepared with a reinforced towing eye and the towing bridle was up-sized accordingly.

As mentioned above, the trick for maneuvering was to release the tow, when entering a marina. What we did was for me to get in the tender and go in ahead, tie up the tender and then go help with tying up the 63'. Also mentioned, motors must be down and tied "straight" so the boat tows straight behind.

Hope this helps,
JCG

Very happy. Runs great. I can cruise 17kts. The new tabs help a lot reducing bow rise when getting plane.
