  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
40' DOUBLE CABIN-Series I (1986 - 1989)
Well we went out to Cape Lookout again this weekend, leaving on Sat morning to stay until Mon. Anchored approx 4 to 500 yards off the beach which put us about the 2nd to last row before the entrance to the Bight which was perfect to dingy in for the beach and to take the dog in for his business. Had just finished a late dinner a little after 9 and my wife was in the galley cleaning up while I and a friend were relaxing on the aft deck scanning the horizon but not seeing much as it was dark out. Something catches my eye and I zero in on it, a dingy very low, loose heading towards the entrance with full current and wind keeping it well off the beach. Then I see something about 150 yds behing the dingy being carried to the entrance and out into the ocean. Yup it's an idiot thinking he could catch up to the dingy by swimming to it. I immediatly yelled to my wife to get my big flashlight as I didn't want to take my eyes off the guy. She comes up and I tell them to keep looking while I fire up the dink. Go to the guy 1st, who is exhausted, with no life preserver and pulled him in then go to his dingy which is empty! No outboard, no oars NOTHING!!! So I turn to the guy and say, WHAT WERE YOU GOING TO DO with nothing in here. Got a story that he used to be in the Navy and thought he would be able to swim it back. Tell ya what, he was lucky that night as there was nothing in his path out to the ocean. Got him back to a 34' ragboat, no George not the Canadians again, who hadn't even started to get rid of their anchor to go get the guy. He had to be out of their sight by the time I saw him. They were gone by the time I got up in the morning.

Noone said ragbaggers were smart just cheap.

Lost a diver here this weekend. One mile out from White Lake pierheads on Lake Michigan in about 60ft of water. Word is that 3 went down and only 2 came back up. No other details.

If he had met up with that hammerhead shark that hangs around the point of the hook inlet he would have had a bad day. Usually about dusk he showes up thats why the flounder boys quit walking that area. That rascal is full grown. For yalls info you best stop that late night skinny dipping on the beach side eaven though it is a lot of fun. Tim

No ever said Navy men were smart:)..... But what an idiot.
Man what a story you have now to tell for the rest of your life

At least he was less stupid than lucky.

Thank God you were there and had the concern and knowledge to save his life.

Good work.

Tim, that's the 1st time I've heard about a hammerhead!!!!! Is he on the ocean side or have they spotted him in the bight itself. When taking the dog over I usually have to get out in around 2-3 feet of water and walk the dingy in. Now you've got me thinking about just leaving him in the kennel all weekend. I DON"T LIKE SHARKS!!!!!!!!!!!

The shark has been spotted several times up and down the rock jetty or brake watter . That i know of never in the bite. But from the rock jetty to the entrance of the bite is grate flounder giging on a light south east wind. Just is shark island just off the point.DO NOT WADE AND AND GIG AND DRAG THE FLOUNDER ON A LONG STRANG OR ROPE BEHING YOU. IF YOU DO YOU WILL REGRET IT IN TIME. It is a well known spot for flounder accasionally you can see some of the Harkers Island guys IN A BOAT along the bank. They know the story.
I heard that the cape lookout boat a sailboat for charter has stop letting people swim there. The boat carries about a max of 40 or so.
I have a 22 foot Riddick bay I have been closs to him twice the thing is 15 to 20 foot long. He is a nice one. He is seen early morning and late evening closs to dark
From what i know he is on the ocean side onely just be ware

Understand that dingy owners losing control of said boat and then swimming after same is a very common cause of drowning.

Here in N. MI over weekend, man in canoe attempted to paddle from MI Lower Penin near Mack City, to Mack Isle or St. Ignace. Started at 4am, disappeared. Body found floating by good Samaritan about 1pm, still wearing life jacket; which means nothing, if not Grade I PFD. Still drowned just the same.

Fifty degree water helps also... PFD or not! ws
