  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' TRIPLE CABIN (1970 - 1976)
I viewed a thread a while back which asked, "How long did it take to own your first Hatteras?", and found it to be very interesting reading.

With that in mind, along with the fact that I too have a Hatteras in need of some restoring, I thought this would also lead to some interesting and informative conversation.

To repeat the question, how long did it take to restore your Hatt? Maybe a better question would be, how long did it take you to become an expert at it? The second question followed by how much would you charge for your services? :D

Just told Kate of your post, she got all excited about your refurb, she wants to know what needs done?

LOL And you thought my post about taking that trip from Chalreston to Ft Myers was long! :D

Let me see, finish (start? ) rebuild of starboard 12V71N, bamboo floor for the upper salon/pilothouse, new headliner throughout, carpet for the lower salon along with master and guest staterooms, new appliances for galley along with flooring from there forward into the crew's quarters, cover existing molested wood with some type of high end wallpaper, vinyl, or laminate material, update the heads (except VaccuFlush which is already in place), new cushion for bow seating on foredeck, and an expert to tell me how to accomplish all of the above and still have enough money leftover to fill all three tanks with diesel. There, that oughta do it!

When would Kate like to start? Has she threatened you with divorce? Is she willing to liveaboard a 58TC? If so, would you consider a trade for a... uh,... 58TC which needs all of the above?

Oh yeah, one other thing.

At the risk of sounding like an expert, why didn't you answer my question? How long did it take to restore your Hatt?

Now, don't take my thread off topic again!

I can do that for you Randy........

Nothing complex there, and my headliner work will sound like a drum when I am done !!

How long ?

Standard answer.............two weeks ! :D

My wife and daughter never ask me how long before I get something/anything done, be it at work or around the house, because I always tell them

two weeks

LOL I'll be there in two weeks! :D

I can't wait for Chris to jump on the estimate you just gave me!

Randy,

I tell Chris the same thing.......will be done in two weeks !! :D

Here I was thinking all this time you were a trustworthy boat restoration guy!

Seriously, I have probably been on more member's Hatts than anyone else on this forum. I have seen everything from pristine examples to those who make ole' Freebird look downright socially acceptable in "Biff's" yacht club! :D

That being said, come on guys, answer the question!

Oh yeah, I forgot Paul doesn't own a Hatteras, but Chris says he's about to if his isn't finished in two weeks! :D

I doubt anyone sits back and says, "ahhhh, all done!" From what I can tell, being a newbie Hatt owner, refurbs never have an end date, always something to do........

mine is not a restoration, it is a custom built using a Hatteras hull. A restoration would have been easy! Maybe Paul can total up the man hours for you.

If a restoration is easy, how come it takes two weeks?

Now would somebody else PLEASE answer my question as it pertains to their Hatt restoration?

Enquiring minds want to know!

How bout it luckydave? Did "Ohana" come to you the way she looked in the pics you posted?

Oh yeah, I forgot, he is semi-retired and will answer only 80% as many questions on here as he used to. :D

Anybody else out there with a "1510" who wants to give me some insight?

4 weeks, as you can see from my web site

Randy,

In all seriousness:

There is no set time. Even the same job on the same sister vessel will vary in time due to the unforeseen.

Many projects take longer than expected due to add-ons, hidden problems that become uncovered, and so on.

The important thing to remember is to keep a steady pace and keep moving forward.

I was informed by a Hatt Employee that to build a new 50' takes between 14-18 months, and they have a whole crew of specialized people.

On Boss Lady we took it down to the point where "they begin" then added some special improvements, such as the lift rails, new windows, the aeration system , the new larger ER vent boxes ( currently being built ) , and redesigned helms, and interior layout. All this takes time.

How do you eat an elephant ?

One bite at a time ;)

Okay, maybe I need to rephrase the question. I'm not really looking for anyone to give me an estimate on my 58 and I know there are always variables depending on how far gone the boat is and how far you want to bring it back.

I suppose I am just curious to hear from anyone who bought a Hatteras similar to mine who can shed some light as to how long it to THEM to restore THEIR boat to its current state, finished completely or not. I know many are still a work in progess as I have seen several which fit into that category. Lots of folks own 1510's out there, so I'm just curious to hear from as many of them who feel they have something to add to this conversation.

Gosh Paul, I hope it didn't sound like I didn't appreciate your input which I did. It just doesn't really match my output, that's all. :o

Hey Thudddd, I didn't look at your personal profile to see if you listed a link to your website.

If you did, pardon this comment. If you didn't, please list it so I can take a look.

Now please excuse me to see if I could have answered my own question. :p

Thudd is doing an Express, he cut the top off, I have seen his pics on another post he did back in December. Thudd, maybe you should repost the link here or add it to your signature so we can easily keep up with your project.

Randy, surely someone has redone a 58, just give them some time to get on the thread.

Chris

Randy,

No problems.

I just threw in my two cents, not realizing you were referring to your type/size yacht.

All is good, all is cool :D

I restore mine about once a week and it takes about an hour. The only thing you need is a hose, some soap and a brush.

Are you talking about your Admiral or your boat?

Heres one I looked at a few years ago. Five minutes and I walked away. Looks like it took TWO WEEKS LOL. As I was walking down the dock with the owner he kept asking me to make an offer. I bought the SUB instead, since I'd hafta gut the whole thing anyway. I think he let his son from 'Frisco decorate it! Love ya 'Bird! :D ws
