  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
67' COCKPIT MY (1987 - 1995)
My boat went on the hard 2 weeks ago to get the stabilizers serviced and some other things.

We are now looking at a hurricane in Tampa this Monday or Tuesday or at least the effects of being near one. On top of that, the Republican National Convention has closed the bridges around the yard so even if they splash it and tender delivery, I can't get the boat out of there.

Obviously the best thing for me would be to leave it on the hard until the storm blows through and the Republicans leave town so the bridges open again. I have tried calling the yard and no response. My concern is they will splash the boat and tender delivery in the next 48 hours leaving me with a boat I can't protect with my usual haul out and limited options for protection in a hurricane.

If it comes to that kind of confrontation, anyone know what I should do? Can I refuse acceptance so the boat is their responsibility? My house is on the water and in the first evacuation zone so I may be out of here 36 hours from now.

Hopefully the phone will ring and they will keep it on the hard and I will happily pay a bill for it.

The yard doesn't answer the phone or return your messages??? That seems to be the first problem. Is there any way you can get over there? There is a fair amount of prep you'd want to do anyway... get any canvas stowed, furniture off the aft deck, anything else that can blow around stashed or secured, openings sealed up, etc etc.

I'm not a lawyer etc, but would try by every means possible to notify the yard to keep the boat on the hard. Fax, email, overnight registered letter etc all at once. And keep calling. Are you close enough to drive over in the morning?

I would also inform my Ins. Co. that the yard is not responding to your concerns, past experience in the Construction Biz was that when you as a contractor are working in a building, then for all intents you have "control" of the building and are liable for any of your actions that cause damage to the building, I would assume same for shipyard unless you signed a waiver which would not impress your Ins. Co.

I dropped a 57 off over there on Monday to be hauled for a redo on the running gear. I went over yesterday and asked to have it hauled before the weekend and was told "probably not". They were waiting for corporate to make a decision as to going into hurricane mode. I assume they haul their boats first. Bruces boat was still on the hard yesterday.

I now have a decision to make with my boat as far as to haul or not. The boat would ride fine behind the house, but I worry about unprepared neighbors boats.
My stomach is in knots between my boats, my house[ without windstorm insurance] and my out of town boat owners boats that I secure.

Hey my friend Captdis,

Thanks for the feedback on Freestyle. I have been travelling but plan to go over tomorrow and get in somehow if they are closed.

For your own problems, I have paid significant money for line priority at a 100k haulout on the Alafia. If you want something hauled, I am happy to call in my chip on that.

Please PM me or call Pat bustle for my contact info if you want me to work on that for you.

Stay safe.

Thanks for the offer Bruce!! I have a haulout at Embree in Salt Creek if needed. Just have to decide which way to go. The 57 is a customer and I think it will be ok at MM as it is tucked into the corner in the inner basin. I will stop by there tomorrow to add some lines.
Back during Great American's run, I used to bring boats over there for storm protection.
I am so glad I don't have to worry about the Bella Donna any more! I do miss Luis though.
