Took a dinghy ride up the Ortega River and encountered this "House Boat". It appears they are enclosing the aft deck with metal 2 x 4 studs and home improvement store windows. Creative I guess but nothing surprises me at my age.

That makes my eyes hurt. I understand the concept, but why not spend a few extra bucks and make it look right?

It will look better once they put up the gutters and leaders. The sheetrock and cove base molding will complete the interior nicely.

This is a tough crowd........

I heard they were planning to replace the hand rail with a picked fence! Where does the Still get installed?

With tongue firmly placed in cheek>>>>Now we are talking...I bought a 43' double cabin and there is a ton of wasted space on the back porch. A previous owner took a cheap approach to enclose it with canvas and plastic. Ive been looking for a better way to add "living area" and have been saving pictures from this site for ideas, but nothing Ive seen so far appeals to me ...at least not until now.. Thanks for posting

It needs a wood burning stove for ambiance.

Your boat has a back porch? Cool.

When I moved to Florida I had to learn that my back porch was a "lanai" , And now that I bought a boat I have to learn another language; "aft deck" right?

Aft deck is good, and I was just messing with you.

My 41DC has a custom hard enclosure, but I'm leaning more toward getting rid of the glass windows and going with eisenglass, at least during the summer months. You can check it out in my photo gallery. I think it looks pretty good, and none of it came from Home Depot. :)

I'm kinda new to this discussion, so had to look good and hard. Is the issue that one window is divided light and the other isn't? A real marine architect wouldn't mix those up.

I think it looks pretty good too, and its what Im going for. My wife on the otherhand wants it wide open, so eisenglass it is

see, Im learning the lingo "eisenglass" not plastic......and I knew you were just messing with me. Thanks for the pictures...and ideas

Maybe he's going for that "pirate ship" feel ;-)

I'm assuming you mean "Grill". Funny thing is on my Fathers boats growing up on the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh, PA. Every boat we owned had a Grill strapped to the swim platform. When I say Grill, I mean the funny looking Sears back porch style with wheels, a black hood and and a white propane bottle. It sure was funny looking but made good Grilled Chicken and Burgers. We used to have Huge Island Parties and People/friends at first would make fun of it until they smelled whatever he was cooking. I admit it was very Trailer Hood but on the river in the summer it actually work out great. My dad was never really one to care what people thought anyway so it was all good.

You can do what I'm planning to do and change things around with the seasons. Take the glass out during the summer months and snap in the eisenglass. I removed the aft pieces last summer, and it made a TON of difference with air flow. I have canvas to cover it all now, and it sounds like you may have that too. Mine is climate controlled, but I like opening the windshield and wing doors to get a nice breeze in my face while underway. Definitely nice to have what amounts to two salons.
