Hour meter fuse

my hour meter on one of my engines stopped working. at first i thought it was a bad fuel pressure switch, so i ordered a new one. Just before i was about to install the switch i put the ignition in the ON position and wasn't able to get 24v at the switch. I looked at the hatteras wiring diagram and found a 15amp MDA fuse for each hour meter. sure enough the fuse failed a continuity test.

That said the manual calls for an MDA fuse which apparently is a slow blow fuse. (as opposed to the clear fast blow fuses). Does anyone know why this particular gauge needs a slow blow? Why can't i just use a regular 15amp 250v fuse?

My fuse was in the dc panel with the battery shut off switches.

Both my hour meters are out- I've been wondering about this too and casually "exploring" trying to find a fuse, so far coming up empty - so the fuse is actually inside the electrical panel in the area of the DC power? A picture would be lovely here but I'm going to dig back in...

Yes, at least on our '80 53MY, one of those fuses are located in each of the DC fuse panels in each ER. You have to remove the upper portion of the removable panel to access them.

They are MDA type fuses (slo-blow) for whatever reason. But 15A MDAs are commonly available though probably not at the local parts store. You certainly could try standard 15s and if they don't blow, great! But I'd go ahead and order the MDAs just to have them if the standard fuses don't last long.

Thanks i have ordered MDA fuses. I was just curious more than anything. Usually if there is a voltage spike, you want the fuse to blow.....


Each fuse is in the DC main fuse panel, the one with the battery shut off switches. Starboard and Port (Not the DC subpanels) It should be labeled "Fuel Pres. Switch"

Is it possible to ask that someone send a photo of where you find this fuse? I took my panel apart and did find some small glass fuses but nothing that was wired to the hour meters. Please help. Thanks Rusty
