  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
38' FLYBRIDGE DBLE CABIN (1972 - 1978)
replacing the shaft log. had to remove engine risers and 'F' pipe to get at it, these are 427 ford gassers.
i replaced all the exhaust connecting hoses with silicone last time i had them off 10+ years ago.
those hoses still look/feel almost like new but ill replace them.
i know, too long for risers, but they are custom solid copper and honestly dont show any wear, even now.
like last time, ill take them to the guy who made them and have him check them out.
anywho, while im at it im going to replace the on engine hoses for the closed cooling loop.
they are all trident wired stuff. can i replace the wired trident with silicone?
if so, reasonable place to purchase the silicone and clamps recommendations?

thanks

I have the same exact vessel (1973) and had to remove the stbd transmission to rebuild. That gave me a good chance to look at the copper exhaust pipe and the hoses. Like you, I found them clean and in remarkably good condition. All double clamped. Do not plan to change them unless I hear different from this group of experts. Looks to me like the risers are cast iron rather than copper?? The exhaust pipes are solid copper by appearance.
My only concern is that the transmission supports the rear of the engine and engine had to be blocked to remove the transmission. Just hope when it goes back in the alignment is okay without a massive alignment job.

the original risers for these engines were cast. in salt water, these are a wear item.
a previous owner replaced them with the customer made copper ones.
ive owned the boat 20+ years and theyre still in great shape.
the alignment isnt that difficult a job.
if they do it with all the exhaust off, its easy to get at everything they need.
good luck.

What hose did you use for the shaft log ?

i havent yet. going to have the yard install that with the shaft and stuffing box.
hopefully alleviating any splash issues.

ive removed all the exhaust and disconnected the old shaft log and slid it up the shaft.
ill cut the coupling this weekend.
theyll pull and send out both props and the 1 shaft.

If you are studying all of this for servicing your original packing boxes and replacing the log hose, would this be a good time to go ahead and install a PSS or Las-drop seal system?

i thought about it, but will stay with the traditional box.
im not adverse to the dripping and like the simplicity.

As long as you thought about it.
We have also stayed with the original logs for the same reasons.
