  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
It appears the holding tank tube has broken off on forward tank on my 53 my
Marina sent their strongest man and he could not budge the fitting
Could l just buy a new fitting and drill an appropriate hole in the fibre glass tank and fibre glass the new fitting in.

Another question Anyone know the internal diameter of the hose from the holding tank to thedeckplat on a 53 my 1981

On mine the hose from tanks to deck plates is 1 1/2” and I’m thinking of using the saniflex odor shield. Pricey but highly recommended $639 for a 50ft roll.

Are you talking about the pick up tube?

It will come out. You just need more leverage. I had a 3/4 drive rachet with a 3' pipe on it to get mine loose and it still took some muscle. A little heat wouldn't hurt either. Don't give up.

I just had this job done on my boat because one of the holding tanks wouldn't pump out, and the guys from the marina who did the work said that was by far the hardest part of the job. According to them it took a breaker extension, a torch and 2 guys pulling to get it loose. You aren't doing anything wrong, apparently Hatteras just tightened these things down with extreme prejudice at the factory.

My tanks were never plumbed between 1972 and 2020.

Similar efforts were required to get them opened, and there seemed to be a slightly vacuum or something when they cracked loose.

I have the aft tank still unused.

Sky you are talking about the rhree quarter inch square holo othe vertical part of the fitting Does this loose a piece on the top big enough to get a tube down or does it loose the entire fitting including the elbow the hose is attached to

I depends. It may loosen the whole fitting or it may remove the plug.

ditto on the vacuum and effort, not plumbed 1973-2001

I shelled out the money for the saniflex hose and didn't regret it. What I regretted was not eliminating the in-line tank vent filter, which would clog if the humidity changed. For the tank pick-up tube, the recommendation is to use PVC to make a new tube. If you couldn't get the fitting off the original I'd say you're on the right track, but get a piece of starboard to make a new plate - IE, cut a hole in the top, make a screwed-down plate and install the fitting on that. Make sure you angle the end of the pick-up tube, about 1 1/2" off the bottom of the tank. Stinky job but you'll be happier.

Nothing sticks to starboard. You would not be able to seal it. Just get old fitting out and you'll be good to go.

Mine was from Home Depot and I don't believe it was brand-name starboard since BoatLife sealant stuck to it and it sealed.

5200 sticks to Starboard for a little while. The only thing that will stick to Starboard forever is dirt.

My 53' '79 pick up tube had dissolved due to Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean saltiness for most of its life. Was a mutha to get the nut off to access the pick up tube. Some judicious heat and a breaker bar did the trick. A squirt or two of Kroil might help loosen the nut also, but be careful adding a flame after Kroil. I did not have any Kroil at the time. Put in a piece of 1-1/4" PVC schedule 40 drain pipe. Pretty sure it was not 1-1/2" Perfect fit. Sealed it at the top with silicone caulk I think? Didn't cut the top of the tank off, just slid the PVC into the existing opening. Pump out has not been a problem for 9 years. While we were at it we did the 2nd tank at the same time. Thanks Don, for the help.
