  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
36' CONVERTIBLE-Series II (1983 - 1987)
I am looking to buy a 1985, 36 convertable with a radar arch. Looks like it came right from the factory...beautiful... but about a foot too high for my covered slip. Has anybody hinged one or is it possible to take a foot out of it.
Thanks in advance....RAM

The problem with taking a foot out is usually the tapered sides won't match up.

I'd hinge it. Mine is hydraulic, but a manual might also work if concerned about price. Mine is hinged immediately where the arch meets the side walls. You may want to check with your ethnical specs if you have a radar. SOme of the radar units do not like to be stored on their side (which the hinge open).

Hmmmmm.........."ethnical specs"? What race is your Radar, Brian?

Good point... I thought about just hingeing the radar if that would give me enough clearance....Most likely not, so I will look at hingeing it at the side walls like yours.
I did a little research and figure a boat yard would want a couple of thousand dollars for just a manual one. Good enough for now.
Thanks RAM

I had a 53MY with a manual hinged arch. To pout it up or down by myself, I just used a chain to install a pulley on the bridge in front of the arch and used my dinghy davit cable for power to hold the arch as it went up or down. The cable went forward from the davit through the pulley up front and back to the arch to let the arch down towards aft. Or 2 people can do it manually fine.

My knowledge of radar arches is limited to studying them before building a radar mast for our 43DC. Our mast is hinged and a one man job to lower. Nevertheless, I would get tired of lowering or raising it every time I went out or came in. I would shorten the arch and sacrifice appearance for convenience.

That is my not so EXPERT opinion.
