That guy needs a faster boat. And a flag.

Three hours?!?! I think the CG needs a faster boat. :p

They had to go in reverse or they'd get there before he did.....:) Guy really sounds like an idiot.

Well after all the hype and drawing guns on a boater, what did they find?????? Al Quida??
Mexican drug lord? Edward Snowden? maybe dirty underware in the drawer?

They make the guy out to public enemy 1 for not complying. I don't want those people on my boat either. Really sad that we have to"comply" without having done anything wrong.

I am not totally sure of this, but. I think if the letter of the law is to be followed, boarding a boat without the Captains permission is still considered piracy. If the Captain refuses boarding, I think they can detain the boat, maybe even take it in tow, a warrant would then have to be obtained to board. This could bring up another interesting possibility, when taking someone under tow, if you toss them the line you are then responsible for the safety of the vessel under tow. If you have them toss you the line, you are not responsible, as I understand it.

In any care this might be an interesting situation to follow. Of course with the idiots we have on capital hill, anything could happen.

I do not want them on my boat either, and would refuse if they asked to board.

The USCG has the right to board our boat for a safety check, like it or not it s the law. I know the has been a handful of horro stories over the years, mostly in the Caribbean due to drug trafficking but 99.999% of boardings are no big deal. Frankly, I don't mind as if anything it ensures at least a minimum of safety on the water. I ve been boarded 3 times over the past 5 years (Ft Luderdale, Throgs Neck NY and Miami) and each time the coasties were friendly and professional. It took 10 minutes and they were on their way.

When this guy refused to let them on board, he opened a big can of worms... Obviously the CG had to worn what he was hiding. The fact they took 3 hours to make him comply worries me though, what if the boat had been packed with explosives? He was allowed to sail past ships and the Golden Gate Bridge???

you got to wonder the chain of command when something like this happens. I don't think the first boat on the scene was able to make the call to board the fleeing boat, if he was it sure took a long time to take action.

I hope this isn't a trend, they are the guarding the coast, aren't they?

JM

Since the suspect boat left from a slip, I doubt you could call it guarding the coast.

Do you really believe that checking for your trash and oil discharge placard keeps us safer? Not to mention the trash disposal plan...
I always feel safer knowing that they did not find any terrorists hiding in my underware drawer.

Like all government they have to justify their funding, so they harrass us so they can say that they are keeping the country safe.

We all know it is the law and post 9/11 everyone has been willing to give up their rights.
The law should be changed and the CG should need reasonable cause, but it is not going to happen.

Last wednesday I know air travel was safer after the TSA groped my wifes boobs and legs. They were even ready to make her throw out the 1/2 pound of fudge she bought for me. Could have explosives in it you know!
I bet they would of known how to handle that sailboat.
