Hatteras Model
43' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1978 - 1983)
This is mounted in my operating console on the flybridge. I don't know what it is. There is a red wire cut off and hanging from the bottom. I suspect that the unit is no longer required, and I could use the real estate for the install of my new Furuno system. Anybody familiar with this?

That must be an old converter, right? It looks like a smaller version of the new Newmar 32v to 12v converter under my helm to run the Simrad system.

I'd be curious if the cut wire on the bottom reads 12v?

While installing a new Systems Monitor, I've learned to become conscious of reallocating original wires. The high water alarm kept going off because a related red wire with a yellow charger, like in your pic, was used used for something else long ago. It's taking some effort to trace it down to the TBSI panel under the battery switches and figure out what's supposed to be for what.

Could be a converter. I honestly don't know, and can't find any model info on it. I haven't yet traced out the wires that attach to the top, but the bottom wires are the cut red wire, a yellow that I suspect is a ground, and the one that has me scratching my head: a black wire with an inline fuse that ties into the main circuit block in the console.

I've already pulled out 100's of feet of unused wiring from the boat. Most cut with the exposed ends laying there. Didn't test all, but I know some were hot based on just tracing them to their source.

Today I was pulling wires with cut ends under the console down thru the chase all the way to the ER. The Simrad EVO2 system I removed would only recognize one of the two transducers that remain installed in the hull. They are a pair of 12 degree tilted element B164 (I think) transducers. The PO told me only one worked. I traced the cables in the ER and marked them. Turns out one of them is one of the cut off cables up on the bridge. I guess that's why it wasn't recognized by the old system.

Those are factory labels on the wires. If Hatteras is still supporting their boats, the answer may only be a phone call away..

32 to 12 volt converter. I have 6 on board.

I probably have the schematic in the paperwork. I had seen that but was too lazy to look it up. I figured some seasoned Hatt guy would have the answer.

I'm guessing that the input is from the terminals on top. The wires from the bottom go to a circuit block. Sound right?

It looks light a dimmer unit for the instrument lights ,they look like the 32-12 converter.

I second this. The symbol on top is for a variable resistor...

At first I thought it was a (Newmar) DC to DC converter, but open second look, there is no yellow ground wire, which would be present on a converter. Even my old 3 pole Newmar had a center ground. The new units have 2 grounds (one for the 32v side and one for the 12v side).

Additionally, that diagram on the top is the generally accepted symbol for variable resistor, so that's my vote. Not sure what it is used for but could be lighting or some other purpose.

Do you have the wiring diagram for the boat? If so, you should be able to find those wire #"s listed in the schematics. That would tell you the intended (original) use.

That 45 series II is a 12v boat. Probably not a 32 - 12 converter.

There should be a variable voltage unit to dim the instrument lights and another one for the compass light. I believe that is what you're looking at.

It seems awfully large to be a dimmer. Maybe like 4" wide by 8" tall. The bottom of the unit has a yellow wire, a black wire with an inline fuse, and a red wire that has been cut previously.

I took off a unit that looked just like that. Mine still had the rotary dimmer wired to it that controlled the brightness of the original helm instrument backlights.

Wires are numbered by Hatteras, looks like, so they probably have a wiring diagram which can tell you what this unit is, if you don't have the owner's manual with wiring diagram in it.

I've been poring over the electrical schematics but cannot find wire 313. I can find pretty much everything in the 300's except that one. That's my problem. I found 312 and 314, but 313 not so much. So today we traced the wires and removed the unit. And there was the answer clearly printed on the bottom where we could not see it while it was installed. So, anybody need a dimmer? Its yours for the taking.

I presume. It was disconnected. All the instruments were replaced when the QSM11's were installed. Yes, 12V.

I found this in an old catalogue. It is not in any later cats. 5Kohm pot, all voltage in.
Just received the thingie today.
I'll stash it in my shop. Anybody needs it soon, I have just shipping into it.
After soon, The rum equation kicks in...
