Not Currently A Hatteras Owner
After finding my leak today, we have decided that since the headliner in the boat is cover with mold on the back side, that we probably should replace it. we are going to replace all of the headliner, but I have some questions.

We do not like the perforated headliner that is origional from Hatteras. We want to use a solid headliner like most of the new boats have. I have been looking around adn see that there is paddes back material and non padded back. Do yall have experience with this padded material? would this install the same way? I would like to possibly change the direction of the Headliner too. We are thinking of installing it from bow to stern in place of port to starboard. Let mw know whta you think. I want to know befor I get started.

Don't know about the material but installing it bow-stern will look decidedly odd - not necessarily bad, just odd since headliners are always installed across the vehicle.

Now, If you were a rock star and did this, everyone would be doing it and it would be the hot new trend! But, to paraphrase Doc Robbins (Joe Pantoliano) in "Eddie and the Cruisers,"We're not rock stars, we're just some guys on a website!"

A couple of thoughts:

You mentioned that the leak cause the perf'ed headliner to mold. The solid headliner will reduce ventilation, so if another leak occurs, you're likely to have more of a mold and mildew problem. Make sure you have "killed" what has already developed before putting the new one up.

I believe the padded version is for applications where the headliner is mounted to something flat, like a cieling board, or the underside of a fiberglass deck. I see no benefit of having the padding if the headliner is mounted cross-member to cross-member. In fact the added weight of the padding may contribute to sagging down the road.

I believe the reason most boats have the headliner installed port-starboard is that this is generally the way the cross members run, which it is stapled to. You will need something running longitudinally to staple to every couple of inches to support the weight of the headliner. Mechanics aside, I like the look of the cross-mounted headliners, with teak slats covering the seams instead of the normal "bead" material the installers use.

One last thought....if you want to change your in-cieling lighting, now is the time to do it! I've had similar thoughts with my boat, of replacing the headliner with non-perforated, and at the same time, installing dim-able puck-lights. The headliner will have to come out for this, so if you've considered it, now is the time! I'm even toying with the idea of making cieling panels to use the padded stuff for a more finished look, and lighing is much easier to mount anywhere in the cieling this way.

Good luck, and send pictures!

Hatteras is using a product called Whisper Wall. It is a fabric that is hung by tension on plactic tracks. This makes it easy to install, remove for access, and replace without damage. It is easy to clean with 210 and a soft cloth and doesn't have the foam back that will attract mold and mildew. They are installing the head liners fore to aft and they look quite nice.

I am going to go ahead and do the lighting. I have not decided what to do with it yet, but i am in the process of figuring that out.

With reguards to the mold, I will solve that problem too. It will be gone before the new headliner goes up. I am willing to take the chance of not having the perforated just to get rid of it. I really do not like it.

With reguards to installing it for to aft. I would much prefer it and that is how the new boats have it installed, but I would be willing to install it port to starboard again if I could make it look better. I really feel the the origional headliner looks institutional. I want something less of that way and more of the high end look. I was thinking adding the padding would allow me to give it that look.

I was in a New 63 Bertram last weekend and their headliner was the padded stuff. It was run port/stbd and it look awesome. But that is a 3 milllion dollar boat, so it better look awesome.

I put up new headliner in Feb. took 3 days, ordered from Sailrite .com they have all the material perforated, non perf. foam back non foam hidem rolls. I was happy with the price, and delivered in 1 week to Bradenton. Cheers Stewart

Stewart,

I notice you are in Bradenton. What marina are you in? I am at Riviera Dunes.

I looked on their website. I am going to get a piece of sample from the new Hatteras boats too. Then I will make a decision.

Neat stuff, though their website doesn't say much about marine use or availability.....

Stewart, did Sailrite make the headliner for you? If so what did you send them?

thanks garyd

I did mine using panels I made then covered it and stuck them in place with velcro. I know years back that was how hatteras was doing it then. The lights are from Lowe's they are 12V and come with a transfomer that you don't use and you can't bet the price!

Dan,

What did you make the pannels out of before covering themI woul like to make something similar.

Someone (I believe it was Hatteras of Lauderdale) redid the headliner in our salon quite a few years ago. They did not use the old Hatt perforated stuff, but instead went with a suade type solid material. And, they ran it fore to aft instead of side to side. I personally do not like the look of it and I will be replacing it this winter. I prefer the original look and I am going to not only go back to the perforated material, but also run it side to side. And while I'm at it, all new lighting is going in as well.

Whatever you choose, just make sure you can clean it. This stuff I have is impossible to clean.

Sailrite-I just measured then ordered a roll of off white perf. and a spool of hidem, they just sell measured bulk, no pre finished stuff. Stewart, Twin Dolphin Marina Bradenton

It sounded like you wanted that look. I made it out of coraplas but would not use that again it was hard to get a straight sharp edge due to it having hollows in the middle. I would use luan and just seal it that is what Hatteras used. I figured the other stuff was plastic and would work as a Insulator which it did but made the edges a little difficult to get tight!

Dan,

I dont mean to sound ignorant, but what is Luan?

Luan refers to a finish grade 1/4" plywood.

Does anyone knows where to get the Plastic Tracks. I am replacing the original stuff but has used "luan" with velcro on the cabin since did not found where to get the PT.

Thanks

Mikep966: Great movie!

I agree that using a foam backed liner is inviting mold if you ever get a leak again. And you can not remove the mold from the foam with bleach. It will desolve it!

I have a '66 41TC and my headliner is not perforated. It has an embossed star pattern. Does this mean it was replaced at one time?

dan,

what did you use between the panels? is that hidem or a plastic "T" material?
wish this thread came up last year when i had my headliner down.
