Headliner Installation

While Installing some new headliner in one of my staterooms I ran into a little snag that I cant figure out how to overcome. When stapling the headliner along the wall where the doors are, there is not enough room to get a stapler between the door frame adn insert a staple along the edge. So basically I dont know how to attach it. Do yall know how a professional would do it? I have to figure out how to attach it so i can stretch the headliner tight. It had to be done at one time since it was stapled from the factory. Please advise, I want to get this finished up. Thanks.

I had the same problem when I installed new headliner in the heads. I left that area for last and then I drove some small finish nails in there by hand. I have seen the staplers with the angled head on them though. In fact, I think one of the battery operated types is available. I saw it at Home Depot. It was either a Ryobi or Dewalt.

Without seeing it, I would suggest that perhaps the difficult area should be the starting point not the ending. There are ways to use thin strips of rigid material with the headliner tucked up and over that edge and the rigid material mechanically fastened a bit further out where you can get at it. Hope that makes sense. When I did my aft deck, thats how it was done. The headliner stapled to the edge of a wood cross member, (or it could be to a wood bulkhead) then a strip of wood gets tacked in and the headliner stretches from there across.

My 39 HL has a piping around the borders that makes it look like it was triple sewn in place. It is likely OEM, but it looks nice and makes for a neat installation. If you were willing to add it in complimentary areas, it would look nice for sure. Probably not the best fix for a single spot though. It may be available at SAMS.

The border strip is called "hide-em" and it should cover all of the staples around the edge. It's available at SAMS or Sailrite.

I tried using that as the starting point, but I just can not seem to get the nails to hold once I stretch it tight. The headliner wants to pull there and cause a tear. Possibly I need to try to and use more nails.

The other issue will then become the Hidum strip, but I guess that I could put nails in that too.

I will also look for an angled head staple gun, that would be the most convenient way even if it is pneumatic it woudl be ok.

I would staple thru the hide em and the headliner together and use the hide em strip to reinforce the headliner so it won't pull thru or you could use that cardboard- like stuff that is used for the edges of headliner ,then staple the hide em over that.....Pat

I've watched a few "professionals" (canvas guys) do this headliner trick... they used an air stapler with detachable heads over the door frames, or where no normal stapler could go...attaching an adjustable staple head is invaluable. I'm not sure what those staplers, or the various heads, cost, but I do know that it yields a professional job! Good luck on this project!!

I would never attempt a headliner install with a manual staple gun. The air powered gun is the ONLY way to go. Beg, borrow or rent one.

I agree with Eric ! Ive had both paws cut twice and need it again ! They used to call it J.O.s cramp, but now its called carpal tunnel! Ive had the ULNAR job done also. Sanding? Painting? Stapling? Gotta love the sport.

That is the type of staple gun I am looking for. Not sure if it is exact, but it is on the right track. I cant even staple the Hideum strip because the door frame is too close, but I think that may be a start. Thanks for the help, and hopefully I can fine one with detachable heads that have angles.
