  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' COCKPIT MY-Series II (1993 - 1996)
Still scratching my head. My neighbor pointed out how my 48cpmy is listing to starboard approximately 5-6”. Walking across the aft deck it is evident you are walking downhill. I suspected that the dinghy/davit mounted on the transom was the culprit. I let it down and laid a level across and it is still listing. Not as bad but still listing. Noting that the generator is mounted on the starboard side may cause a list. I’m just not convinced the Hatteras engineers would design it that way. I am currently only pumping water out of the starboard tank thinking maybe the combination of the dinghy and the generator may be to blame. Still not solving the listing. I looked in the bilge and noted a small amount of water. Not enough to cause a significant list. I pumped it out to dry. Still listing. I ran a borascope into the bilge but couldn’t spot anything out of the ordinary but was limited by bulkheads. There is a slight waste type odor but I use Noflex in my tank. I’m wondering if my sanitation hose has decayed and begun leaking from my master head. I would think enough waste to cause that much of a list would smell to high heaven. When I purchased the boat I had a survey completed and was advised the hull on the starboard side was wet. I haven’t had it dried yet but wondering could you possibly have enough moisture in the hull to cause a list? Anyone run into this type of an issue?

Your title tricked me. Was going to ask how much:)

We had a list we discovered after we put the new name on the transom. Decided it must have been the lack of a former davit. Found 300lbs of lead bars on the opposite side of the list in the farthest aft compartment in the aft stateroom. Moved them to the opposite side which corrected the list. Now that we have a new davit and tender on the boat I see a slight list on the opposite side. I’m guessing I’ll have to move some of those bars again.

A lot of things could have happened in almost 30 years with things shifted around and modified. It’s pretty common for lead bars to be used to balance a boat, maybe at some point something was changed and either lead was added or removed.

As to the dinghy and davit, did you add it? Or maybe it was added at some point. The stern of a dinghy is always the heavy part because of the motor, can you swap it around? Swapping the chocks shouldn’t be a big deal

Pretty much all bilge compartments should have limber holes for water to flow out into the center bilges so it’s unlikely for water to accumulate outboard. Also the outboard bilges are very shallow and unlikely to hold enough water

What about batteries, any changes? Someone could have added a bank or extra batteries.

The easiest way to spot a list is to look at the stern and eye ball the waterline at the exhaust outlet.

Pau Hana had a slight list to starboard (same side as the davit), and the PO said it started after they removed/discarded a damaged dinghy with motor. The dinghy cradle was positioned so the dinghy and motor would be to port, correcting the list. It was barely noticeable after a couple of months, and since I was in the process of learning the boat, and replacing all the bilge pumps and hoses I was confident there was not any leaking/water retention issues causing it/related to it. Ian destroyed the boat AFTER I completed all the bilge pumps (of course), with new check valves and hoses, float switches etc. I had a recurring water accumulation in the generator room under the genny but it was related to rain getting in somewhere up top and running down the cable guides. We had 600lbs of lead ballast in the aft stateroom port side exhaust box enclosures or the list might have been worse. Nice job on the title for the thread!

I was just reading about the lead weights. I wonder where they are located

Weights on my boat were under the exhaust in the master stateroom. I moved other things around to remove the list so I could get rid of the lead.

Have you checked the fuel level and your return lines?

Tanks are full. I tend to keep them that way. Not sure what affect return lines would have. The returns are set up to to return fuel from the tank it was drawn from

Interesting conclusion to this problem. I reversed the dinghy so that the outboard is on the port side. I also added an additional 100 pounds of ballast in the port side bilge. Magically the list is gone. I am still playing with the amount of ballast as when both water tanks are full the list is gone but as the starboard side water tank begins to empty the list is now slightly towards the port.

as it turns out the problem is a bit like being married. No matter what I do it’s wrong….lol (just kidding sweety)
