When I was at AT-T, they put the RFID on all the trucks.... Nothing like being asked "why were you idling so long at the intersection of "Main and 1st St" at 2:09 yesterday... (uh, traffic)
Or why did you take 71 mins on your lunch hour yesterday (uh, YOU called me at 1:01 and we talked for 10 mins.... and we are not allowed to talk and drive)....
Big brother.... is all around

Re: North Carolina taxes and fees.

Let me clear up the NC tax issues here, and something you better be aware of if you think "hiding" your boat will help you avoid property taxes that pay for the services provided by the city and county where it lies. 1) Indeed, you pay two sets of property taxes, in my case one to Morehead City and one to Carteret county. Each about 2% of the BUC value of the boat. 2) Our (Republican I should note) legislature and new governor, have for the first time required documented boats to register with the state. There is a $50 annual fee "but not a new tax!) associated with this. Now they gotcha, this info goes to cities and counties, you got nowhere to hide. So now they can collect more taxes. The only problem I have personally with this is the new fee and the additional bureaucratic time to deal with it. I've always paid my city and county taxes since we started keeping the boat here full time. And the other part that bugs me a little bit is that the cities and counties will find a way to spend their new taxes, rather than lower the rate for everyone. I'm sure a lot of that has to do with the state providing less funding to localities, especially for schools, so here's a way to offset it and the guys in Raleigh can brag about their "low taxes" "Low spending" accomplishments to the delight of the sheeple. Kind of ironic that one method of doing this amounts to "we're making those fat cats with big yachts pay their fair share!" politics....

Yeah this is something else to deal with. But hey, its still a bunch lower than SC property tax. Thats why I registered in NC. Well, actually it worked out for me because I was living and working in Southport. Then Lexington, SC county started trying to chase me down to pay their tax. I threw the B.S. flag and showed them I was paying NC tax and they seemed to be happy (for the time being). One note: I asked the tax lady a question. What if I purchased a $100,000 dollar boat (out of state) and sailed it around the world, taking me three years. Your telling me just because my mailing address on the document says SC, I owe you three years of taxes and never even been in the state? She said "yes sir". At 6% of the value, thats $18,000 when I return. Is that correct? "yes sir" was the answer. Just to be sure, it doesnt even matter where the boat was purchased. The mailing address states you live in SC so you owe us the taxes. Man, doesnt that just beat all !!! And I've been traveling the world, not even using any of SC's roadways etc., and thats the money hungry place that America has become. Totally Nutts !!

In Tennessee, you pay about 10% of the value of the boat as a 1 time sales and use tax. There after, you pay an annual registration fee. You apply a sticker to the bow on both sides, indicating the annual fee is paid through a certain date. On rare occasion, I have seen people checking the validity and presence of the Tennessee registration stickers in Marinas. Looking around this morning in our Marina, there are many unregistered boats, and many with expired registration stickers, the TN registration sticker must be applied to documented vessels as well... So don't send the "checkers" from the Carolina our way!

Saw the USCG business card he gave one of the men on our dock when they were here.... He's "Intel Sector Jacksonville"....

George one question
WHAT CAN THE CITY AND COUNTY DO FOR BIG BOAT OWNERS EXCEPT COLLECT A USELESS TAX..CITY AND COUNTY LAW CAN NOT BOARD A DOCC VESEL AND WILL NOT DO A INVESDIGATION OF THEFF. THEY SURE CAN NOT DREDGE CHANELS REPLACE BUYES AND SUTCH. P;EASE TELL ME WHAT THEY USE THE MONEY FOR. There is a frderal excise tax on all fishing tackle sold in the us at a rate of 10% on the first sale. This money is collected by the feds and distributed to the states based on the number of fishing licens sold and eventually triclkes down to the county. This money is designated and mandaded to spend on boat ramps and boating related items. I support and agree with this concept 100%. But i do not agree where the tax on big boats is headed Maybee some hole where it will make a Raleigh Politican look good it is a binch of crap.

Tim:

Provide law enforcement and fire department and EMS services, all of which we have been very grateful for. Also, help educate the masses so we don't have even more idiots roaming the streets, those streets also get paved and lit. Personally, I feel like I get a lot more than my money's worth which is not always the case with taxes in general by a long shot.

no need to get in a contest but the boat does not touch the city or county. It probley brings more tax by just being there rather than running me of to Deleware to doccument it as haling port which is quite simple.
Sorry George just a bur under my saddle for tax i have about 200 lots on the ground in 2007 they were apprazed by the county and are now selling for half the apprazed value and they will not lower the county apprazal each one i pay almost 600 in tax each year. I aint happy to say the least.

Tennessee is exactly like Florida where sales tax and registration are concerned. We don't have personal property or ad valorem taxes. The sales tax is actually graduated with about 9.5% (depending on the county) on the first $3,200 and 7% (state tax only) on the balance with no cap.

As for the registration sticker on a documented vessel, it is supposed to be placed on the window or other such point that is closest to where the boat operator is located, not on the bow is would be the case with state registration ahead of the number.

It was purfuctly kleer to mE. :D

Hey Tim come on up to NJ. You'd be paying 12K per lot. My wife's family are builders. They bought a 15 acre parcel that they planned to subdivide into 8 1.5 acre lots with new homes. As soon as they filed for the subdivision, the town hit them with a 17.5K tax bill for each lot. This is before the land was developed, any utilities, roads, sewers etc put in. After they built homes the taxes started coming in at 30-45K per house. All this in a town with relatively low taxes. Property tax is a sore subject up here.

that what we in the south called PLUCKED to put it gentely

As an aside, Florida has a nice little thing called Antique vessels and for both Seaweed (1983) and Algae (1972) it's next to nothing. I'd bought her in 2008, registered in Georgia ($40 for three years, $25 for the dinghy) then last year bought a Sojourners Pass (one year "pass" for Florida waters) at ($50 for the two boats)

This past month I registered and titled both Seaweed and Algae for a total of $36. (Title fee, plus stickers) and it's my understanding I'll be paying $6 for each boat per year from this point on. I do have a Florida address (my daughter's home) so I'm a resident.

If your boat is old enough, consider Florida.
Seaweed is not documented and is just 23', but she's home. Life's great afloat! :)

Correction.... Masses are not educated they are indoctrinated. And considering how many idiots roam the streets, I'd say it s not working out very well :)
